Thailand Triumphs Over Cambodia 3-2

Akkarapong Poomviset scores twice to seal the victory for Thailand

Thailand's national football team clinched a thrilling 3-2 victory against Cambodia on December 20, 2024, at the Rajamangala National Stadium during the ASEAN Football Championship. The home side claimed their fourth consecutive win, securing first place in Group A with 12 points, demonstrating their dominance throughout the group stage.

The match was far from straightforward. Cambodia struck first with a goal from Andrés Nieto, who found the back of the net at the 32-minute mark, sending the visiting fans wild. Cambodia’s early lead came after a clever pass from Sao Rotana, allowing Nieto to shoot past Thailand's goalkeeper, Kampon Pothamarak.

But the Thai team responded rapidly, leveling the score at 1-1 just one minute later. Wanchai Kanitsri took advantage of a rebound after Cambodia's goalkeeper could not hold onto the ball, and Akkarapong Poomviset was quick to slot it home. This instant reply showcased Thailand's resilience and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Both teams had their chances throughout the first half, and as the game continued, it became clear the match was going to be tightly contested. Thailand narrowly avoided disaster when VAR ruled out another goal early in the second half due to offside.

Thailand's second goal, which came at the 78-minute mark, was born from teamwork and clever passing. Akkarapong shimmied through the defense following clever interplay before hitting the winner, taking the home crowd to their feet once more. This was his second goal of the night, proving instrumental to his team’s success.

Just six minutes later, Chalermsak Akkhee added to the scoreline, driving home from close range after Thailand capitalized on another corner opportunity. The momentum seemed firmly with the Thai side as they surged to 3-1.

Despite conceding tours late goal from Abdul Kader Koulibaly, who scored with style at the dying seconds of the match, Thailand held on for the win. The final whistle sparked celebrations among the players and fans, solidifying their position as group champions.

"We played well, but we need to maintain our focus as we move to the next stage," said Thailand's head coach, Masatada Ishi, emphasizing the need for consistency as they move forward.

With this victory, the Thai team not only booked their spot in the tournament's semifinals but also showcased their attacking prowess and commitment to winning. Their next test will be against runners-up from Group B, with their eyes set firmly on capturing the championship title.

This match illustrated the intense rivalry and growing prowess of Southeast Asian football, particularly within the ASEAN Championship framework. Fans left the stadium buzzing, hopeful for their team's continued success.
