Thailand Tightens Border Security With Drone Ban And Pass Closures

Authorities restrict drone flights and close key border passes to protect national security and ensure public safety amid sensitive Thai-Cambodian border tensions

On June 21, 2025, significant security measures were implemented along Thailand's border with Cambodia amid increasing concerns over national sovereignty and public safety. The Border Protection Command for Chanthaburi and Trat (กปช.จต.) issued a formal request urging the public to refrain from operating unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, within government premises and all restricted zones. This prohibition is grounded in the potential threats drones pose to national security, including the inadvertent disclosure of sensitive state information.

The command emphasized that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remains delicate and sensitive. In light of this, they stressed the importance of these restrictions to maintain stability and safety. Officials are keen to ensure that any unforeseen incidents do not hinder the work of personnel tasked with safeguarding the region. The command's statement highlighted the necessity of effective responses to any undesirable situations, underscoring the broader goal of preserving national security in a complex geopolitical environment.

Simultaneously, the 2nd Army Region, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, took decisive action by ordering the closure of the Sai Taku border pass in Chanthaburi, Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province. This closure took effect from the evening of June 21, 2025, and was prompted by an incident involving approximately 30 Cambodian tourists. These visitors had entered the Prasat Ta Kwai area in Bak Dai sub-district, Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province, where they recorded videos and sang songs, activities that raised security concerns among Thai authorities.

Thai military personnel intervened promptly and handled the situation with professionalism and respect, ensuring that the incident did not escalate. The closure aligns with the Royal Thai Army's order no. 806/2568, which governs the control of all types of border passes along the Thai-Cambodian border. This order aims to protect Thailand's sovereignty and territorial integrity, safeguard the lives and property of Thai citizens, and maintain the security and stability of border regions.

Before its closure, the Sai Taku border pass operated under restricted hours, opening three days a week—Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday—from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Alongside Sai Taku, the Chong An Ma border pass has also been closed recently. Presently, only the permanent border passes at Thaworn Chong Sa-ngam and Chong Chom remain operational, continuing to regulate cross-border movement under strict security protocols.

Cross-border trade at these points plays a vital role in local economies. Cambodian residents typically cross into Thailand to purchase consumer goods, vegetables, and fertilizers. Conversely, Thai citizens often cross into Cambodia to buy alcohol, beer, and cigarettes within government-regulated quantities. Additionally, some Thais visit casinos across the border, highlighting the multifaceted nature of cross-border interactions.

The Royal Thai Army has clarified that these border control measures, including the opening and closing of passes, have been enforced since June 7, 2025. These controls cover areas under the jurisdiction of the Burapha Force in Sa Kaeo province and the Suranaree Force, which includes Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. The measures are designed to adapt to evolving security situations and to ensure public safety.

Given the complexity of information circulating about border activities, the Royal Thai Army has urged the public to stay informed through official channels. Updates and announcements can be accessed via the Royal Thai Army's website at www.rta.mi.th and their official Facebook pages “กองทัพบก Royal Thai Army” and “ทีมโฆษกกองทัพบก.” This transparency effort aims to prevent misinformation and provide accurate, timely information to citizens.

These coordinated actions by military and border authorities underscore Thailand's commitment to protecting its national interests and ensuring the safety of its citizens amid sensitive border dynamics. The prohibition on drone flights and the strategic closure of border passes reflect a proactive approach to managing security risks and maintaining order in a region where geopolitical tensions require constant vigilance.

While these measures may temporarily disrupt some aspects of cross-border trade and tourism, officials emphasize that they are necessary steps to uphold Thailand's sovereignty and protect its people. The situation remains closely monitored, and authorities stand ready to adjust policies as conditions evolve, balancing security concerns with the needs of local communities.

As the Thai government and military continue to navigate these challenges, the public's cooperation and understanding remain crucial. The unfolding developments along the Thai-Cambodian border serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between openness and security in border regions worldwide.
