Thailand Launches First Japanese-Style Swimming Instructor Program

The training aims to combat child drowning rates through enhanced coaching techniques.

The debut of Japan's swimming instruction methodology was publicly acknowledged with the first training program for Japanese-style swimming instructors held on December 11-12, 2024. The workshop, initiated through collaboration with TASSANA, targeted the urgent issue of drowning rates among children under 15 years old, which have made headlines as one of the leading causes of mortality for this demographic.

Thailand's struggle with effective swimming education has unraveled significant challenges, primarily due to the lack of swimming facilities across schools and communities. With the aspiration to tackle this pressing concern, TASSANA, which focuses on enhancing regional communities through sports, ventured to incorporate Japanese methodologies renowned for their structured and logical approach.

The training commenced with theoretical classes complemented by practical sessions, providing insights for local swimming coaches. Key components of the curriculum included strategies for enhancing student motivation, explanations of why specific exercises were chosen, and techniques to address fears around water effectively. Such courses were crafted not just to instruct but to deepen the coaches' comprehension of the art of teaching swimming.

According to the owner of TASSANA, "The skills enhancement of swim coaches not only saves the lives of local children but is also the first step to spreading the charm of swimming." This statement echoes the larger ambition driving the training: to create more proficient instructors who can nurture safer, more engaging environments for youth swimming.

Feedback from participants highlighted the transformative nature of the training methods introduced. One TASSANA coach stated, "I learned coaching methods from perspectives I hadn’t considered before; the Japanese approach is both theoretical and practical." The consensus among attendees emphasized the need for continued sessions, acknowledging the program's success and potential to evolve over time.

The initiative aligns with TASSANA’s broader objectives to stimulate local engagement and participation via comprehensive sports programs, which include facilities such as pools and gyms serving community needs. Their commitment to enhancing coaching capabilities is seen as pivotal not just for skill promotion but in nurturing the next generation's safety around water.

Through this first training program, the potential for Japanese swimming methodology to resonate globally began to take shape. S and F Inc., alongside its various international endeavors, aims to share its values around nurturing physical education. "The Japanese instruction method will show significant impacts in countries like Thailand where swim instructors are scarce and opportunities for information exchange are limited," remarked Ayuzawa, emphasizing the power these methodologies can wield on international shores.

The pinnacle of this training's significance rests not only within transferring technical skills but also within championing the cultural shift toward embracing safety as part of water-based activities. S and F's commitment to contribute to global advancements through swimming education signals the start of renewed efforts to spread this philosophy beyond borders.

With the curtains drawn on the training, S and F is resolutely open to following up on this dynamic with future sessions and adaptations to the program. Their vision extends past mere instruction; they are focused on fostering safe, engaging aquatic environments, ensuring each child has the resources to not only learn but to thrive as confident swimmers.

This first foray of Japanese-style swimming instructor training holds importance well beyond the immediate and serves as a cornerstone of enhanced aquatic safety and education across Thailand and potentially the world.
