Thailand has made significant strides toward improving its public transportation framework by transferring the responsibility of three promising electric train projects from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to the Ministry of Transport. This pivotal decision, made during the Cabinet meeting on December 23, 2023, was spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit.
The projects, which are set to transform the mobility of residents across Bangkok, include the Silver Line, which will connect Bangna to Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Grey Line running from Wacharapol to Thonglor, and the Blue Line extending from Din Daeng to Sathorn. Each of these lines aims to create direct routes between densely populated residential areas and business centers, thereby reducing commuting times and enhancing daily convenience for travelers.
"The government aims to create convenience for commuters with the new lines, enhancing the connectivity across the city," Suriya stated, reflecting on the necessity of integrating various transport modes to meet the population’s needs. Currently, the electric train system serves 13 lines with 194 stations, covering approximately 276.84 kilometers. The expansion of the electrified rail network is part of the second phase of the Mass Transit System Plan for Bangkok and the surrounding areas.
The Silver Line will extend 19.7 kilometers, encompassing 14 stations, starting from the Exhibition and Convention Center at Bangna, traversing along Bangna-Trat Road and culminating at the southern terminal of Suvarnabhumi Airport. The newly introduced path promises not only to facilitate airport access but also to alleviate pressure from notorious traffic congestion along this busy corridor.
Similarly, the Grey Line stretches 16.3 kilometers with 15 stations and features multiple connection points to existing lines. Key intersections include junctions with the Pink Line and the Brown and Yellow lines, making it exceedingly significant for commuters who rely on direct transfers during their daily travels. Such connectivity is expected to offer significant enhancements for residents along the route, allowing for both ease of access and convenience during peak hours.
The Blue Line will add 9.5 kilometers and feature 9 stations, running through central areas, and connecting with existing infrastructure to create smoother travel experiences. Bangkok's rail network capitalizes on innovative designs which enable trains to intersect seamlessly, avoiding the common disjointed experiences faced by users of the public transport system.
Phichet Khunathammarak, the Director of the Rail Transport Department, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating, "This integration will allow for seamless transitions between electric train lines, addressing the disconnection issues present today." The collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the State Railway of Thailand aims to streamline the management of these pivotal projects and safeguard their timely execution.
The next steps involve Laor distributing responsibility to the State Railway of Thailand, which will coordinate with the BMA’s Traffic and Transportation Office to gather project-specific data, assess readiness, and draft the terms of reference necessary for contract negotiation and project initiation.
Government officials expressed optimism for the new lines, forecasting their operational debut within five years. This timeline reflects the urgency to meet the public’s need for efficient and sustainable transportation options amid Bangkok’s mounting traffic challenges.
