Thailand Aims For 10 Billion Baht Tourism Revenue By 2025

New strategies target film production and high-spending foreign tourists to boost economic growth.

Thailand's tourism sector sets ambitious targets for 2025, aiming for an impressive revenue of 10 billion baht from foreign tourists, particularly focusing on the booming film production industry. This initiative comes as tourism officials recognize the increasing competition from neighboring countries like Vietnam and the complexities of attracting Chinese tourists due to recent policy shifts.

On March 25, 2025, Miss Sawanatree Taveewong, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, elaborated on the strategies designed to draw a more diverse range of tourists into the country. With current tourism metrics showing a modest growth of 2.9% for international arrivals and a 12% increase in total tourism revenue compared to the same period last year, authorities understand the need to bolster these figures.

“The government acknowledges the competitive tourist market from China and other neighboring countries, aiming for new tourist groups,” Taveewong stated, outlining efforts to expand beyond traditional tourist demographics. A key element of this plan includes enhancing Thailand's appeal as a prime filming destination with cash rebates up to 30% for film productions that utilize Thai locations. This initiative aims to substantially increase earnings from the film industry, growing from over 3 billion baht the previous year.

One of the core strategies involves seeking out high-spending tourists from markets with potential for longer stays, such as wellness and medical spa tourism. Increasing the quality of tourists can benefit the local economy by promoting longer durations of stay and higher spending levels.

Additionally, Taveewong emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure the safety of tourists throughout their journey—from departure until they return home. Collaborative efforts between public and private sectors will enhance regulations for tourism activities, ensuring the safety of both life and property. This includes the development of tourist police applications that provide immediate assistance when needed.

Another focus area is the aim for sustainable tourism practices. The Ministry recognizes the necessity to spread the benefits of tourism income throughout local communities. By involving local populations in environmentally friendly practices, the government hopes to foster a symbiotic relationship where tourism aids in preserving natural resources and cultural heritage.

“We believe in cultivating a system where local communities not only benefit economically from tourism but are also pivotal in maintaining the environmental integrity of our beautiful country,” Taveewong noted.

Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism is exploring legal reforms to enhance the registration of alternative accommodation services, allowing non-registered hotels and home stays to operate legally. This motion aims to provide them with access to government support, including financial assistance and benefits, thereby enabling a fair competitive field and improving service standards.

Ultimately, the Ministry understands the importance of supporting small businesses, especially those hosting tourists in home-like settings, as these contribute significantly to the authentic experience that travelers seek.

As Thailand embarks on this ambitious journey, officials are optimistic that these strategies will not only elevate the tourism industry but also foster sustainable growth that benefits the entire nation. Stakeholders are encouraged to remain vigilant in adapting to ever-changing global travel trends and preferences to ensure Thailand remains a top destination for global travelers.

This comprehensive approach positions Thailand favorably in the global tourism market while promoting financial benefits for local communities and preserving the country's rich heritage and natural beauty. With the right initiatives, the nation aims not only to meet but exceed projected tourist revenue goals, paving the way for a bright future in the face of competition.
