Thailand defeated Cambodia 3-2 on December 20, 2023, solidifying their position as the top team of Group A in the 2024 ASEAN Championship, also known as the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup. The victory marked Thailand's fourth consecutive win, allowing them to proceed to the semifinals.
Played at Rajamangala National Stadium, the match began with both teams displaying aggressive tactics. Cambodia opened the scoring early when Saroatana made progress down the right flank and provided a pass to Andreas Neto, who confidently finished to put Cambodia ahead 1-0 by the 32nd minute.
Just moments later, Thailand struck back. After a free-kick from Warachit Kanitsribamrung, which was initially saved by Cambodia's goalkeeper Laeh Lay Heng, Akkapong Pumwiset was perfectly positioned to tap home the equalizer, making the score 1-1 only two minutes later.
The first half ended evenly, but the second half saw Thailand come out with greater intensity. Thailand took the lead at the 78th minute thanks to Akkapong, who executed a smart give-and-go with Warachit before landing his second goal of the match, making it 2-1.
Minutes later, Thailand extended their lead to 3-1. Following a corner from Weerathep Pompan, Chalam Sak Akkee found the net with a stunning volley, showcasing Thailand's dominance as they began to look comfortable.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Cambodia did not give up. Just before the final whistle, Abdel Koulibaly netted another goal for Cambodia, bringing the score to 3-2, but it wasn’t enough to change the result as Thailand sealed their victory.
This match was pivotal for Thailand, who finished top of Group A with 12 points from four matches. They will face the second-placed team from Group B, which includes contenders like Vietnam and Indonesia, on December 27, 2023.
Masatada Ishi, the head coach for Thailand, praised his squad’s performance, especially highlighting Akkapong’s outstanding effort throughout the match.
Following the victory, Thailand's football community is buoyed by optimism for the upcoming knockout stage, with expectations high for advancement beyond the semifinals of this prestigious tournament.
