The Thai government is ramping up its efforts to combat online gambling, with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) reporting significant progress in suppressing illegal gambling activities. According to N.S.S. Shikant Wathana Chanthorn, the Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, from January 1 to March 31, 2025, authorities have blocked a staggering 29,185 URLs linked to online gambling and arrested 4,627 individuals involved in these illegal activities. This crackdown is part of the government's ongoing commitment to create a safer digital environment for its citizens.
Shikant emphasized that online gambling poses not only financial risks but also threats to personal data security and potential legal consequences for those involved. "Online gambling is not just about making a profit, but also about exploiting consumers and tricking them into gambling. It is important to be aware of the dangers of online gambling," he stated. Under the Gambling Act, anyone promoting gambling can face up to three years in prison and fines of up to 5,000 baht.
In addition to the crackdown on online gambling, the government is also preparing to test a new Emergency Warning System (EWS) to alert citizens about disasters through digital television and radio broadcasts. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is collaborating with various agencies to ensure that the EWS is effective and reaches all citizens. A trial run of the digital TV emergency warning system is scheduled for May 14, 2025, as part of the government's broader strategy to enhance disaster preparedness.
Phirongrong Ramasoot, Director of the Office of the Digital Economy and Society Development Fund (DESA), highlighted the importance of integrating multiple communication channels to ensure that citizens receive timely and accurate information during emergencies. The system aims to provide clear and immediate alerts about disasters, enhancing public safety and awareness.
The NBTC has been tasked with inspecting and monitoring the performance of the DES Ministry in disaster situations. They are working to improve the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for disaster alerts and ensure that all relevant agencies are prepared to disseminate information effectively.
During a recent meeting, the NBTC discussed the necessity of maintaining traditional broadcasting methods alongside modern technologies like the Cell Broadcast system. This dual approach is crucial for ensuring that citizens can still receive important information even if one system fails. The government recognizes that while mobile alerts are beneficial, they may not always reach everyone in the event of network failures.
As part of the short-term plan, signals about disasters will be broadcast directly from five key AM stations covering almost the entire country. However, due to the limitations of analog technology, the quality of sound may vary, and some areas may not receive clear signals. The government is exploring options to improve this situation, including the development of a digital broadcasting network.
In the medium to long term, the government plans to develop a DAB+ digital radio network that can provide targeted alerts to specific regions. This system will allow for the transmission of images and emergency messages, enhancing the effectiveness of disaster communications.
Furthermore, the NBTC is working on a comprehensive plan to enhance public awareness and preparedness for disasters. This includes coordinating with local authorities and agencies to create a unified response to emergencies.
The recent earthquake that struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, on March 28, 2025, prompted the government to reassess its disaster communication strategies. The NBTC has been instructed to investigate any delays in implementing the EWS and to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to improve response times in future emergencies.
