Thai Deputy PM Critiques Derogatory Language Amid Cybercrime Discussions

Political discourse heats up as legislators confront issues of scams and respect in parliamentary language.

In a culmination of escalating tensions in Thailand’s political landscape, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has strongly criticized political discourse surrounding gender and the appropriateness of language used in legislative sessions. On March 25, 2025, during critical interpellations regarding the functioning of the government, a heated exchange broke out when Mr. Wiroj Lakhanadisorn of the Move Forward Party used a term deemed derogatory towards female members of parliament while addressing issues of cybersecurity and online scams. Phumtham called out the term "Geeky," explaining that it derogatorily translates to a slang term referring to female genitalia in Tagalog, thus highlighting a need for respect in political communication.

The political atmosphere intensified as accusations flew among parliament members accusing each other of inadequate responses to the growing threat of cybercrime. Rakchanok Srinork, a Member of Parliament from the People’s Party, revealed on the same day that online scams and call center gangs have been rampant, with severe implications on the economy – asserting that the damages from such scams could amount to 2.24 trillion baht. Ignoring pressing issues, Rakchanok pointed out, reflects an overarching failure in leadership, stating, “The PM’s negligence has allowed a surge in these crimes.”

Reports indicated that over 50% of the impersonation scams have ties to syndicates operating from neighboring countries like Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, raising concerns about public safety and national security. With Thailand often viewed as a destination for tourists, Rakchanok argued that it is unjust to also be considered a haven for criminals exploiting its digital space.

Amid such serious concerns, Deputy PM Phumtham emphasized that government leaders must focus on safeguarding citizen rights and reflect mature political behavior during discussions, urging fellow members to prioritize constructive dialogue regarding critical issues within the nation.

In his arguments, Phumtham acknowledged the frustrations of the public, which have been mounting due to what many perceive as ineffective governmental action. “We must reach a point where this dialogue moves beyond mere jabs and shift towards a collaborative effort to seek solutions,” he stated, urging fellow parliament members to embrace discussions with respect and clarity.

Phumtham also called for transparency and accountability among politicians, underscoring the need to move towards serious discussions on legislative matters rather than personal attacks and insinuations that have marred recent assemblies. “If there are allegations regarding my conduct, I demand evidence to support claims, and the public deserves to know the truth behind such remarks,” he added, stressing the responsibility of parliament members to maintain credible and dignified discussions.

The contention surrounding Mr. Wiroj's comments illustrates broader issues of gender sensitivity and respect in a rapidly evolving political discourse environment, and highlights the necessity for leaders to foster a collaborative political atmosphere aimed at addressing vitally pressing issues rather than diminishing others through derogatory language.

Rakchanok's compelling arguments resonate with the public's desire for a serious crackdown on organized crime, particularly in response to the alarming rise of scams that have been inflicting severe economic and personal losses. With many in Thailand begging for a robust governmental response, she emphasized the pressing need for prompt and effective legislation to combat cyber crimes decisively.

Despite grappling with such pressing concerns, the ruling coalition's actions have faced significant pushback, with various parliamentarians highlighting the need for immediate, decisive measures against the powerful networks responsible for these crimes. Time and again, criticisms have pointed towards ineffective action by the government, as they continue to fail at providing a systematic approach towards eliminating syndicates preying on vulnerable citizens.

In a country increasingly relying on digital connectivity, the government's perceived indifference towards issues like cyber schemes generates mounting frustration among constituents. Observing gaps in law enforcement and legislative measures reflect broader systematic failures within the government, showcasing a growing disconnect between the ruling class and ordinary citizens.

As parliamentary discussions progressed, parliamentarians— emboldened by public outcry— took to examining how international collaborations could bolster efforts against cross-border cybercrime efforts, with calls to create stringent measures aimed explicitly at addressing the root causes of such crimes.

The need for fresh, actionable legislation that directly addresses the intricacies surrounding these crime networks cannot be overstated. For Thailand to reclaim its reputation and to ensure the safety of its citizens, immediate and effective governmental intervention in collaboration with law enforcement agencies is essential.
