Teyana Taylor Seeks Jail Time For Iman Shumpert Amid Divorce Fallout

Allegations of leaking divorce details reignite legal battles between the ex-couple, affecting their careers and parenting.

Teyana Taylor is embroiled in a contentious legal dispute with her ex-husband, Iman Shumpert, following their finalized divorce on June 27, 2024. The drama between them has escalated, as Taylor is now pushing for Shumpert to be held in contempt of court. She is requesting that he serve 20 days in jail and face maximum fines for allegedly leaking sealed details of their divorce settlement to the media, according to a report from TMZ Hip Hop on March 19, 2025.

According to Taylor’s legal team, she has endured significant online backlash since reports surfaced indicating she was awarded four properties—including a condo originally gifted to her by Shumpert—while he received only three. Legal documents report that Taylor also secured a tour bus, which she insists she paid for, in addition to a Maybach she bought after Shumpert allegedly crashed and abandoned her Rolls Royce without replacing it.

The couple shares two daughters: nine-year-old Junie and four-year-old Rue. Shumpert is said to pay $8,000 per month in child support, a figure reflecting their previous amicable arrangement amid growing animosities.

Leading up to the settlement, Taylor accused Shumpert of draining nearly $4 million from their joint account, which left her with a hefty renovation bill of $200,000. Furthermore, she has expressed concerns regarding Shumpert’s behavior while under the influence around their children and his disruptive actions at their family home, which included cutting off utilities.

Despite ongoing conflicts, the status of their professional lives continues to move forward steeped in acclaim and opportunities. Shumpert—whose career in the NBA concluded after a brief tenure with the Brooklyn Nets in 2021—has recently launched his own cannabis brand, TSA Approved. Meanwhile, Teyana Taylor, although she announced her departure from music in 2020, is poised for a resurgence. Her vocals will feature on the upcoming track “Hard Times (Smile)” from Will Smith’s new album, Based on a True Story, set to release on March 28, 2025.

Taylor remains active in Hollywood, where she recently supported her co-star Niecy Nash at her 55th birthday celebration alongside fellow castmates Sarah Paulson and Naomi Watts. She also plays a role in Hulu’s high-budget legal drama alongside stars like Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close, which is expected to create even more buzz around her professional endeavors.

Moreover, she recently wrapped filming for One Battle After Another, a significant project helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This film, boasting a $175 million budget and featuring an impressive cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, is slated for an August 8, 2025, release. In addition, Taylor is set to appear in two upcoming Netflix films, including Tyler Perry’s Straw and Joe Carnahan’s crime thriller RIP.

As Taylor approaches her legal battles head-on and strives to reclaim her narrative in the media, she is entangled in a zealous pursuit to highlight her professional activities while managing personal hardships. Taylor's team maintains that the online backlash she faces over the settlement details, which includes Shumpert allegedly leaking them intentionally to generate interest for his new music, is fundamentally unjust. Taylor has made it clear; she wants Shumpert held accountable for what she perceives as a reprehensible breach of trust.

In contrast, Shumpert's legal representation countered these allegations robustly. Attorney Stephen C. Steele issued a statement on March 19, denying that Shumpert had leaked any of their divorce proceedings to the media, insisting, "My client, Mr. Iman Shumpert, has never whatsoever leaked any allegations or claims stated in any of the pleadings in the Taylor/Shumpert divorce case." Steele goes on to express Shumpert's commitment to comply with the court order sealing details of their separation, emphasizing that he has no interest in discussing private matters with the public.

Thus far, their story is one of public scrutiny juxtaposed against personal turmoil. Shumpert and Taylor's long and colorful relationship began in 2011, officially transitioning from dating to engagement in 2015, and they subsequently married in 2016. Taylor ultimately filed for divorce in January 2023, marking a dramatic chapter in both their lives.

As Taylor continues to advocate for her rights amid these turbulent waters, both she and Shumpert must navigate their future as co-parents, each aiming to maintain their distinct identities in a post-divorce world filled with career ambitions and lingering resentments. The coming months promise to reveal not just the outcomes of their legal showdowns, but also the resilience and evolution of each individual, both personally and professionally.
