Texans Sign Cam Robinson To Strengthen Offensive Line

After trading Laremy Tunsil, Houston aims to bolster protection for quarterback C.J. Stroud

The Houston Texans have taken significant steps to reshape their offensive line, recently signing veteran tackle Cam Robinson to a one-year deal worth $12 million, which could escalate to $14.5 million with performance incentives. This move comes on the heels of a tumultuous offseason, highlighted by the Texans trading away their starting left tackle, Laremy Tunsil, to the Washington Commanders for multiple draft picks on March 10, 2025.

Robinson’s signing marks a crucial addition for the Texans as they look to bolster an offensive front that struggled significantly last season, allowing 54 sacks—the third most in the NFL. Last season was particularly challenging for quarterback C.J. Stroud, who was sacked 52 times, contributing to an underwhelming sophomore year.

Upon joining the Texans, Robinson, 29, is expected to step into a pivotal role, serving as a temporary solution at left tackle while the organization continues to rebuild. Having started all 17 games last season between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings, Robinson brings valuable experience and stability to the Texans’ offensive line. His journey into the NFL began when he was selected by the Jaguars as a second-round draft pick in 2017, where he earned recognition as a consistent performer.

Before his acquisition by Houston, Robinson was brought in by Minnesota after the Vikings lost their left tackle Christian Darrisaw to injury during the 2024 season. Robinson filled in admirably, starting in all 10 regular-season games as well as their playoff appearance, showcasing his capability to perform under pressure. In total, he played 999 offensive snaps and allowed only seven sacks.

Meanwhile, the Texans recognized they needed to make drastic changes after the poor results of the past season. Following Tunsil’s departure, which came partly due to his unsatisfactory penalty count—19 in the previous season, including 12 false starts—the Texans opted to create space within their salary cap. Reports suggest Tunsil had been seeking a substantial contract extension, perhaps upwards of $25 million per season, which the Texans felt was excessive given the associated risk. By trading him, they not only alleviated financial pressure but also gathered valuable draft picks that could support future roster improvements.

Robinson’s contract with the Texans includes performance escalators that could increase its value. Team dynamics will shift as Houston also added guard Laken Tomlinson and traded away Kenyon Green, another key offensive starter, to the Philadelphia Eagles for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. This collection of moves underscores a strategic decision by the Texans’ coaching staff and front office to revamp an offensive line that had suffered under the weight of injuries and poor performances.

Experts have pointed out that Robinson represents a rebuilding piece—his addition is seen as a positive step toward stabilizing the offensive unit while younger talent matures. Observers note that with Robinson’s ability to lay down a strong performance at left tackle, the Texans will better cushion Stroud's effectiveness as they aim for a much-improved offensive strategy in 2025.

Looking to the future, Texans executive management appears focused on building a robust team that can flourish in the increasingly competitive landscape of the NFL. A combination of skill acquisitions and tactical trades highlights the franchise’s commitment to a brighter horizon - for Robinson, this should mean continuing to play a major part in the upcoming campaign, serving as a buffer against defensive pressures and helping to improve overall offensive efficacy.

As the Texans gear up for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Robinson to ensure he can fulfill expectations and thrive in Houston's newly reconstructed offensive lineup. Fans and analysts alike will undoubtedly watch how the changes manifest on the field and influence the Texans' performance against their rivals. Whether this revamped offensive line will deliver the improvements needed remains to be seen, but Robinson’s presence is certainly a step in the right direction.
