Tesla has announced a massive recall impacting all of its Cybertruck vehicles delivered in the United States due to a significant safety concern regarding a trim panel that may detach while driving. The Tesla Cybertruck, an innovative electric vehicle launched to much fanfare, has now been caught in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
The recall encompasses 46,096 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. This expansive action follows Tesla's discovery of a safety issue related to the cant rail, a stainless-steel trim panel affixed to the vehicle's exterior. According to Tesla, this panel can separate from the vehicle due to delamination at the adhesive joint, which poses a potential hazard for other road users.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that drivers might even hear a noise or observe the panel beginning to dislodge before it fully detaches. "A detached rail panel may create a detectable noise inside the cabin or customers may observe the panel coming loose or separating from the vehicle," stated NHTSA in their assessment of the issue.
The root of the problem lies with an adhesive that Tesla has described as being "susceptible to environmental embrittlement," causing the cosmetic attachment to fail under certain conditions. To remedy the situation, Tesla plans to replace the problematic cant rail assembly with an upgraded version that complies with durability testing standards. This new assembly will feature a more robust adhesive and a welded stud to secure it to the vehicle’s structure effectively.
