Tesla Model Y Facelift Launches With Enhanced Features

The updated Model Y offers improved range, safety, and comfort for Australian consumers.

The world’s top-selling vehicle has received a facelift, but there’s more than a Cybertruck smile added to this new Tesla Model Y, starting from AUD$58,900 plus on-road costs. This new model brings a host of changes designed to enhance comfort and everyday usability, making it a compelling option amidst increasing competition in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Among the most notable updates is the addition of a precision-engineered indicator stalk, addressing a common complaint from previous models. The Tesla Model Y, which has to contend with over ten Chinese-owned brands entering the market and a politically controversial CEO, aims to maintain its status as the world’s most valuable car company.

The 2025 Tesla Model Y comes in two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model priced from AUD$58,900 and the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model starting at AUD$66,800. The RWD model boasts a range of 466 km (WLTP) and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the AWD variant offers an impressive 551 km range and a quicker acceleration time of 4.8 seconds.

For those looking for customization, the new Model Y offers five color choices across both models: Pearl White Multi-Coat, Glacier Blue (AUD$2,300), Stealth Grey (AUD$2,300), Quicksilver (AUD$2,600), and Ultrared (AUD$2,600). The Glacier Blue paint option is exclusive to the Model Y, adding a unique flair to the already popular vehicle.

In terms of interior, the Model Y has seen significant upgrades. It features a spacious cabin with front trunk space of 116 liters, a maximum cargo volume of 2,138 liters with the front passenger and driver seats down, and a 15.4-inch front-row touchscreen that controls all vehicle functions. The interior quality has also improved, with premium materials used throughout, including synthetic leather that feels luxurious without compromising on sustainability.

The Model Y also comes equipped with two wireless chargers, three USB-C ports, and a nine-speaker sound system as standard, with an option to upgrade to a 16-speaker system in the Long Range model. For those who enjoy streaming, Tesla offers Premium Connectivity for AUD$9.99 per month, allowing access to additional features such as Maps and Weather.

Battery technology has improved as well, with the RWD variant utilizing a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which can be charged to 100% without degradation. The AWD model uses a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, allowing for a range of 551 km. Both variants can charge at a rate of 250 kW on a DC ultra-fast charger, achieving a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes.

Driving the new Model Y reveals significant enhancements in handling and comfort. The vehicle’s suspension has been improved, with a claimed 51% improvement in the ability to absorb bumps on rough roads. Drivers will appreciate the softer suspension that maintains good handling without excessive body roll, making it ideal for both urban and rural driving.

As for safety, the new Model Y has retained its five-star ANCAP Safety rating based on EuroNCAP tests from 2022, scoring impressively across various categories: 97% for adult occupant protection, 89% for child occupant protection, 82% for vulnerable road user protection, and 98% for safety assist technology. New safety features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a front parking camera.

Ownership of the Model Y includes a four-year/80,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year warranty on the high-voltage battery pack, making it a reliable choice for consumers. However, Tesla's warranty is shorter than the industry average, which could be a consideration for potential buyers.

In a recent delivery event in Sydney, Tesla’s local country director, Thom Drew, announced that the first deliveries of the 2025 Model Y would commence, marking a significant milestone for the company. The new variants are priced AUD$4,500 less than the original Launch Series vehicles, which included additional perks for early adopters.

As Tesla ramps up deliveries, it aims to recover from a slower start to the year, with hopes that the updated Model Y will boost EV adoption rates in Australia. The competition is fierce, with several alternatives such as the Zeekr X, BYD Sealion 7, and Cupra Tavascan entering the market. However, the Model Y remains a strong contender, especially with its blend of performance, safety, and advanced technology.

While the new Model Y is impressive on many fronts, it’s not without challenges. The brand perception of Tesla has taken a hit due to the controversial actions of its CEO, leading some potential buyers to dismiss the vehicle based on its badge alone. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some consumers are now wary of owning a Tesla, which could impact sales despite the vehicle’s strong performance and features.

In summary, the 2025 Tesla Model Y stands out as a top choice in the electric SUV market. With its significant upgrades, competitive pricing, and strong safety ratings, it is poised to maintain its status as the best-selling electric vehicle, even as competition heats up.
