Tesco Reveals UK's New Favorite Meal Deal For 2024

Chicken Club Sandwich and Egg Protein Pot take the top spots as customer preferences shift.

Tesco has officially unveiled the UK's new favorite meal deal for 2024, signaling a shift from the longtime champion to fresh flavors for lunchtime shoppers. According to the supermarket giant, the new top combo features the Chicken Club sandwich as the main dish, paired with the somewhat contentious Egg Protein Pot snack and the ever-popular Coca-Cola as the drink of choice.

For the past two years, the title of favorite meal deal had belonged to the hearty Sausage, Bacon & Egg Triple sandwich, McCoy’s Flame Grilled Steak crisps, and of course, Coca-Cola. But starting this year, it seems taste buds are craving something different. Shoppers expressed their preferences during Tesco’s Clubcard Unpacked year-in-review reveal, where the personalization aspect allows more than 18 million customers to see their unique shopping insights from the past year.

The Egg Protein Pot has sparked quite the debate among consumers, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts. “Who’s buying those boiled eggs as their snack in Tesco meal deals? Please own up, we need a chat,” posted X user Milly Driver, garnering over 33,000 likes and highlighting the divisive nature of this meal choice.

Others on social platforms chimed in on the matter, with one X user, Alice Ola, metaphorically likening the egg pot's presence to “the apocalypse.” She boldly declared, “They’re selling two boiled eggs in a container as part of Tesco meal deal. These are the last days. I’m telling you.” Another user, Roxy, humorously suggested, “Getting a boiled egg snack with your meal deal should be punishable by medieval pillory.”

The reactions weren’t all negative, though. Some Reddit commenters praised the Egg Protein Pot as being healthier and ideal for post-workout snacking. “I love a nice boiled egg,” remarked one ardent fan, indicating there remains a solid segment of the population supporting the simple snack.

Tesco's reveal is part of their Clubcard Unpacked initiative, which introduced personalized summaries for Clubcard members starting January 6. This service aims to provide customers with insights such as their most frequently purchased items and how many points they accrued through the year. This year's rollout reflects Tesco's commitment to enhancing customer experience based on their shopping habits.

Notably, the Clubcard Unpacked program also indicated the savviest region of the UK, with residents of the Isle of Man earning over 2,200 points on average, showcasing the engagement of users with the rewards program. Alongside item insights, the program features competitions where 40,000 members have the chance to score additional points rewards upon completion of their shopping summaries.

While the new meal deal composition may elicit laughter and eye-rolls, it’s clear there’s room for diverse choices even within the lunches purchased across the UK. The Chicken Club sandwich, potentially representative of shifting trends, provides not only taste but also the convenience and familiarity many consumers desire.

Looking forward, all eyes will be on whether the Egg Protein Pot can capture public sentiment enough to retain its newly appointed status or if it will fall out of favor as quickly as it emerged. Tesco’s willingness to adapt and respond to consumer preferences shows their dedication to not just selling food, but building community through shared experiences, preferences, and perhaps, even healthy debates.
