Teresina's New Mayor Launches Ambitious Urban Policies

Silvio Mendes introduces safety measures and infrastructure improvements during his first address as mayor.

Teresina's new mayor, Silvio Mendes, has unveiled his initial policies aimed at improving urban mobility, public health, and infrastructure during his first official address. The announcement came on February 2nd, as Mendes provided insight on various changes during an interview on the morning show Notícia da Manhã.

One of the standout measures introduced by Mendes is the modification to the exclusive bus lanes, which will now be accessible to motorcycles and taxis. He stated, "The exclusive bus lane is now open to motorcycles and taxis, occupied or not. Apps will be regulated by the council. A red light can be crossed without penalty from 11 PM to 5 AM for safety reasons," highlighting the goal of enhancing safety and reducing incidents.

These traffic measures were deemed necessary following alarming statistics: over 3,000 accidents occurred last year until October, resulting in 46 fatalities. Mendes expressed confidence about the effectiveness of these initiatives, saying, "We want to significantly reduce accidents. This initiative will have impact."

The mayor’s agenda also includes resuming key infrastructure projects focusing on drainage systems. He mentioned the necessity of addressing the city’s main drainage works, stating, "We are aware of the major infrastructure needs as well, including drainage works on three key galleries: Torquato Neto, São Pedro, and Mocambinho. Federal resources are available for these projects," emphasizing the financial backing required for implementation.

Mendes commenced his third term with high aspirations, including addressing health-related issues within Teresina. His administration plans to tackle the city's public health services comprehensively, ensuring residents have access to necessary medical treatments and facilities. "Everything will be done to increase opportunities for the population to access medicines and basic services," he stated, highlighting the administration's commitment to enhancing quality of life.

On the day of the announcement, Mendes attended both ceremonial functions, including a mass of thanksgiving and the collective swearing-in of city secretaries. He also plans to participate in community events, such as evangelical worship services, reinforcing his commitment to the community he serves.

With these numerous initiatives and policies, Mendes aims to create significant changes within Teresina, addressing urgent issues from mobility enhancements to health services. This early stage of his administration is marked by proactive measures intended to leave lasting impacts.

The citizens of Teresina now face the effects of Mendes's policies, witnessing the realignment of urban infrastructure, improved safety measures, and enhanced public health services. These initiatives mark the beginning of what Mendes envisions as transformative governance for the city.
