Ten-Year-Old Achieves A* In A-Level Maths Exam

Kautilya Katariya's remarkable achievement highlights the potential of gifted young learners

A ten-year-old boy has made headlines after achieving the highest possible grade of A* in his A-Level maths exam.

Kautilya Katariya, hailing from Northampton, is among the youngest candidates to take this challenging examination, having surpassed many students who are several years older than him.

Earlier, he gained global recognition by setting the record for the youngest qualified computer programmer at just six years old.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Kautilya self-taught himself mathematics and later scored top marks in his GCSE exam at the impressive age of eight.

His remarkable achievement has drawn attention from educators and the general public alike.

Kautilya expressed his feelings about the A-Level exam, saying, “I was pretty sure I was going to get quite a good grade.”

He hopes to celebrate his milestone success with something simple, like enjoying a Subway sandwich afterward.

Studying at Wootton Park School, he prepared for this exam alongside peers who are seven and eight years his senior.

His tutor, Neil Trivedi, emphasized Kautilya’s unique ability, stating, “Getting this result as an 18-year-old is extremely tough, and Kautilya did it as a 10-year-old.”

With aspirations to tackle even more advanced subjects, Kautilya plans to study A-levels in both Further Maths and Physics next.

Outside the classroom, he leads a typical childhood lifestyle, with interests including origami, swimming, and playing badminton.

With the A-Level maths entries surpassing 100,000 for the first time this year, the subject continues to attract students.

Statistics reveal there was approximately 107,427 entries, marking a 10.9% increase from 2023.

Interestingly, boys were found to be almost twice as likely to choose maths over girls, demonstrating scope for addressing gender disparities.
