Tensions Rise In People Power Party Over Presidential Candidates

Kim Moon-soo questions Han Duck-soo's candidacy amid allegations of collusion and favoritism

In a political landscape marked by tension and intrigue, Kim Moon-soo, a candidate for the presidency from the People Power Party, has raised eyebrows with his claims regarding Han Duck-soo's presidential aspirations. On May 8, 2025, Kim suggested that Han's bid for the presidency was not a spontaneous decision but rather a carefully orchestrated plan. This assertion has ignited a fierce debate within the party, as Kim faces mounting pressure to unify with Han amid allegations of political maneuvering.

During a discussion at the Kwanhun Club, when asked if he believed Han's candidacy was premeditated, Kim responded affirmatively, stating, "I see it that way." This comment set off a chain reaction of accusations and counteraccusations, with Kim's allies alleging that Han had been in collusion with party leadership to secure support for his candidacy.

Cha Myung-jin, a close aide to Kim, took to Facebook to assert that Han had been engaging in illegal communication with the party's leadership, suggesting that influential figures within the party were actively promoting Han's candidacy. Cha claimed that Young-kwon, a prominent party member, was not only aware of these communications but had promised Han full support.

Adding to the drama, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo publicly criticized Han, suggesting that the involvement of former President Yoon Seok-yeol was an attempt to mislead the electorate. Hong's remarks reflect a growing concern within the conservative faction about the implications of Han's candidacy and the potential for a divided party.

Kim Moon-soo expressed his frustration during the Kwanhun Club event, revealing that he felt sidelined as Han's campaign was receiving preferential treatment from the party. "A flower palanquin is prepared for Han. Our party schedules everything for him, but I don't receive the same support," he remarked, highlighting the perceived inequities in the party's support.

In response to Kim's claims, Kwon Young-se, a key party figure, countered that Kim himself had raised the issue of unification with Han, asserting that the initiative was not a top-down decision but rather one proposed by Kim. Kwon pointed out that Han had not registered as a candidate for the party's primaries, implying that this situation was largely of Kim's own making.

Han Duck-soo's camp, through spokesperson Lee Jung-hyun, expressed disappointment over the allegations, emphasizing that Han was proceeding with his campaign independently of the party's influence. Lee stated, "We are conducting our schedule entirely on our own, without any connection to the party." This statement was intended to clarify that Han's candidacy was not being orchestrated by external forces.

However, a political insider suggested that rumors surrounding Han's candidacy were fueled by speculation about Yoon Seok-yeol's involvement. This insider revealed that during discussions in the Yongsan office, there were warnings to remain vigilant against any perceptions of collusion.

Critics, however, have pointed out that Han's decision to run may stem from a lack of strong public support. They argue that his attempts to distance himself from Yoon's influence have not been convincing, raising questions about his motivations. A political analyst commented, "Why did he choose to run in the first place? There’s a need for him to demonstrate political acumen and a clear rationale for his candidacy, which has not been evident so far."

Despite the turmoil, Kim Moon-soo has a solid backing from various factions, including former activists, pastors, and ex-lawmakers. His campaign is bolstered by the support of a group of conservative former lawmakers, led by Kim Jae-won, a three-term lawmaker who serves as Kim Moon-soo's chief of staff. These groups are actively advising Kim on strategies for unification and campaign tactics.

On May 8, 2025, reports indicated that Kim's advisory group consists of influential former lawmakers from the People Power Party, including Lee In-je, a six-term lawmaker who has been vocal in his support for Kim's campaign. Lee stated, "Kim and I share the same views on unification with Han Duck-soo. The presidential candidate should be given full authority." This sentiment was echoed by a collective of 209 former lawmakers who recently issued a statement endorsing Kim Moon-soo as the party's presidential candidate.

Support for Kim also comes from various religious leaders, including Kim Jin-hong, a pastor who has rallied former activists to back Kim. Kim Jin-hong, who has a history of political activism, emphasized the need for the party leadership to prioritize the presidential candidate over internal rivalries.

In a show of solidarity, prominent pastors, including Choi Byung-doo, chairman of the Council of Korean Church Leaders, have visited Kim Moon-soo's campaign office to express their support. Choi remarked, "We hope to rebuild this country, and we will work hard for Kim's victory." In response, Kim has established new roles within his campaign to accommodate the pastors and their contributions.

Despite this support, many current lawmakers who initially backed Kim have distanced themselves from his campaign due to the ongoing controversy regarding unification with Han Duck-soo. Notable figures such as Park Soo-young and Kim Mi-ae have withdrawn their backing, signaling a shift in the dynamics within the party.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the tension between Kim Moon-soo and Han Duck-soo highlights the challenges facing the People Power Party. With internal divisions and external pressures mounting, the path to the presidency remains fraught with uncertainty. The unfolding drama raises critical questions about the future of the party and the candidates vying for its leadership.
