Tenerife Christmas Concert Celebrates 30 Years Of Musical Magic

The annual event unites traditional and contemporary music, showcasing Canarian talent on its notable anniversary.

The vibrant beginning of the XXX edition of the Tenerife Christmas Concert kicked off on December 25, 2024, at 19:30. This beloved event celebrates its 30th anniversary, solidifying its status as one of the most emblematic cultural events of the Canary Islands.

Starting as a festive greeting from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the concert has evolved over three decades, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and musical talent of Tenerife. Renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed soloists have accompanied the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra (OST) on this unique stage, under the direction of Maestro Víctor Pablo Pérez among others. The concert's outstanding recognition highlights the high standards of musical engagement within the Canarian audience, which hosts numerous musical groups and has vibrant music education programs.

For this special 2024 edition, the concert stepped up by being broadcast live across Spain on La 2 of Televisión Española and streamed internationally via rtve.es, enabling millions to enjoy this cherished tradition from anywhere.

The concert, directed this year by Iván López Reinoso, opened with DMITRI SHOSTAKÓVICH’s (1906–1975) Overture Festive, Op. 96, and followed by PABLO DE SARASATE’s (1844–1908) Fantasy on Themes from the Opera Carmen, Op. 25. The program seamlessly blended iconic music from THE BEATLES’ JOHN LENNON (1940–1980) and PAUL McCARTNEY (1942) with the legendary composition of Yesterday (arr. V. Brodski for violin and orchestra).

Dmitri Shostakovich was known for his complex compositions, often reflecting the socio-political realities of his time, and his works fit seamlessly with the festive spirit of the Tenerife concert. Leticia Moreno on violin, Ksenija Sidorova on accordion, and Rafael Aguirre on guitar lent their talents alongside the OST, which engaged the audience from the outset.

The blend of classical and contemporary pieces highlighted the varied repertoire, complemented by songs from THE BEATLES and others, evoking emotions among the approximately 10,000 attendees. The concert was noted for its ability to awaken and share feelings through music, as stated by the presenter: "Es nuestro mejor regalo en forma de música para el mundo."

Adding depth to the concert's narrative, the repertoire included evocative pieces like Manuel de Falla's La Vida Breve, Agustín Lara's Granada, and Francisco Tárrega's Recuerdo de La Alhambra, each piece stirring memories and feelings related to the rich cultural backdrop of Spain and the Canaries.

The celebration wasn’t just about high art; it included beloved local influences with songs like Libertango by Astor Piazzolla and Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel and Alfredo Le Pera. The delightful harmony reflected regional identity along with universal themes of love and nostalgia.

Among the highlights was the introduction of guys bringing 'sabor canario' or Canary flavor to the festive repertoire, revealed toward the end. This included a unique piece composed by local director Diego Navarro titled Navidad de Luz y Mar, intending to become a new classic of this annual recital.

During the climax of the concert, artists including timple player Benito Cabrera, alongside singers Gara Alemán and Árgel Campos performed Una sobre el mismo mar, encapsulating the spirit of both Tenerife and the essence of Christmas as celebrated around the world.

This yearly event began back in 1994 as a simple holiday greeting, and has grown over the years to become a vibrant celebration showcasing the current musical talent from Tenerife and beyond. The concert serves not only as entertainment but also aims to earn charitable contributions, the proceeds from which go to various local charities such as Teidela, Carrera por la Vida, and Asociación de Hemofilia de Tenerife.

Saturday’s gathering, besides celebrating music, truly focused on community, emphasizing togetherness and compassion woven through orchestral performances.

This year's concert reflects on three decades of remarkable history, as highlighted by the organizers who stated: "A lo largo de estos 30 años, prestigiosos directores y solistas de renombre nacional e internacional han acompañado a la Sinfónica de Tenerife en este escenario único." This acknowledgment signifies the dedication and collaborative spirit of all individuals involved, ensuring the event remains a highlight of cultural life across the islands of the Canaries.

With its continued evolution, the Tenerife Christmas Concert looks forward to another successful three decades, echoing the joyous spirits of both Christmas and community celebration through the gift of music.
