Telus Acquires O-NET, Launches Boxing Day Deals

The acquisition reshapes the broadband market as Telus unveils enticing holiday offers for mobile buyers.

Telus Communications has made headlines recently with its acquisition of Olds Fibre Ltd., commonly known as O-NET, marking a significant shift for the Town of Olds, Alberta. Mayor Judy Dahl reflected on this pivotal decision, stating, "we just could not justify the continued and growing cost to maintain and upgrade the network to the standard to compete with TELUS Communications. That was a difficult one. The sale of O-NET marked the end of the era for our community members from the past who worked so hard to plant the seed." This acquisition not only changes the telecommunications dynamics within the region but also heralds new competition aimed at offering enhanced service to locals.

With the end of O-NET's local era, the consolidation brings about more than just business strategy—it aims to save money for taxpayers. Mayor Dahl noted the benefit of utilizing previously underutilized municipal properties, sharing, "with the sale of the current building […] we are utilizing space which was empty – which is great – and we are giving Westview Co-op a home. We’re really looking forward to the renovations as well, it’s good for everyone. It’s going to save money for everyone, combining the two underutilized spaces." These comments reflect the Town’s commitment to achieving operational efficiency.

This acquisition arrives at the same time as Telus has announced its updated Boxing Day sales for mobile devices. Consumers can now take advantage of competitive financing options for various products. The deals include the latest iPhone 16 available for $12/month financing with device return, alongside offers for popular devices such as the Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 9, both available with zero monthly payments upon device return, ensuring customers can maximize their experience with new technology.

Telus has crafted special deals for the holiday season to attract users to its network. The updated mobile purchasing options were carefully selected, emphasizing affordability and value. For example, customers can find the Galaxy Z Flip 6 available for $21.25/month with financing or choose the iPhone 15 at $10/month financing (down from $33.21/month), all paired with complimentary accessory bundles to sweeten the deal.

Plans also reflect attractive pricing structures, all of which include autopay discounts for seamless service throughout the upcoming year. This includes combinations offering repeated layers of incentives for potential buyers, such as the $65/200GB 5G+ plan which caters well to extensive data needs.

The essence of these new deals coincides effectively with the local market reshuffle, creating opportunities not just for the corporate giant but also revitalizing expectations for residents already accustomed to O-NET's services. By embracing both innovative technology and strategic business decisions, Telus is evidently positioning itself for growth within this often competitive market.

The integration of community-focused progress and corporate advancements can be seen as Telus starts to establish itself more prominently within Alberta’s telecommunications space. The acquisition of O-NET not only reflects efficiency measures but also highlights Telus’s commitment to securing customer loyalty through upgraded service options alongside engaging sales offers during retail peaks.

By merging these priorities—the enhancement of community facilities, the efficient use of public space, and customer satisfaction through competitive pricing—Telus signals its intention to become ingrained within the fabric of Olds, embracing community needs just as much as maximizing shareholder interests. This multifaceted approach of development and affordable offerings keeps the public's focus on both the exciting prospects of the future technologies and the immediate benefits they receive as residents.

With O-NET now officially part of the Telus family, consumers anticipate how the improvements to technology and services will affect them personally, hoping for seamless integration and appreciable results. Mayor Dahl’s reflections underline the pivotal moments shaping this transition, demonstrating how community aspirations align with corporate growth strategies.

Subsequently, consumers can expect to choose from competitive mobile offerings and innovative telecom strategies promising exciting developments. Telus's acquisition not only heralds a new era for the Company but also transitions the experience for residents seeking reliable broadband services at competitive prices, particularly appealing during the post-holiday sales season.
