Telegram Blocks Over 15 Million Groups And Channels

The messaging platform intensifies efforts against illegal content amid founder's arrest.

Telegram, the popular messaging platform, has made significant strides in combating illegal content on its platform, reporting the blocking of over 15.3 million groups and channels since the beginning of 2024. This staggering figure highlights the company's commitment to maintaining a safe online environment, as it operates under enhanced moderation measures to address varying forms of unlawful content.

According to Telegram, nearly 129,000 of the blocked entities were associated with terrorist activities, indicating a focused effort on content promoting violence and extremism. Since 2022, the messaging service claims to have deleted more than 100 million pieces of terrorist content, underlining their active role in this battle. "Calls for violence and terrorism propaganda have no place on Telegram. Since 2016, Telegram has published daily reports on the transparency of removing terrorist content," the messaging company communicated, reflecting on their commitment to accountability.

Further adding to their list of blocked content, around 703,000 channels circulated material related to child sexual abuse, with Telegram asserting, "Telegram applies a zero-tolerance policy to materials related to child sexual abuse (CSAM). Since 2018, publicly available images have been automatically checked against the CSAM hash database." This proactive stance demonstrates not only their technical capabilities but also their social responsibility to prevent the proliferation of harmful content.

While Telegram has been praised for its moderation efforts, the platform has also faced scrutiny due to the recent arrest of its founder, Pavel Durov, who was detained at the end of August 2023. Reports indicate Durov was involved with serious allegations of organized crime, including complicity in drug trafficking and child pornography distribution. Authorities also accused him of failing to provide information requested by officials.

After a short period, Durov was released on bail for 5 million euros, with bail conditions manding his appearance at police stations twice weekly and prohibiting him from leaving France. Following his arrest, media sources reported, "After Durov's arrest, the messenger began cooperating with government structures from different countries," indicating potential adjustments to Telegram's operational strategy moving forward.

Subsequent to these developments, Telegram ramped up its efforts against illegal content, reportedly utilizing advanced tools based on artificial intelligence to improve moderation effectiveness. The company has been removing millions of violations of its Terms of Service daily, indicating its proactive stance against the misuse of its platform. "Telegram blocks tens of thousands of groups and channels daily and removes millions of fragments of content violating its Terms of Service,..." the company noted.

Despite these efforts against illicit activities, Telegram users are still cautioned about potential fraudulent schemes among the platform's users. Reports have surfaced detailing scams enticing people with false prospects of easy money through likes and minor tasks, which lead to financial losses instead. "The easy earnings can turn out to be serious losses," Durov emphasized, advising users to remain vigilant about suspicious offers.

Nor have the issues with other related platforms gone unnoticed; recently, Russian authorities have blocked Viber, another messaging service. The restrictions on Viber, as confirmed by Roskomnadzor, stem from claims it didn't adhere to legislation meant to prevent its misuse for terrorist and extremist purposes.

The rise of illegal content, both on platforms like Telegram and the struggles of others like Viber, spotlights the growing challenges faced by social media and messaging services today. It indicates the multi-faceted nature of cybercrime and the continuous efforts required to counteract these threats.

Challenges persist as these platforms strive to balance user freedom and protection from illegal activity. The current situation also reflects broader trends within digital communication, where platforms must remain vigilant against misuse even as they enable broad public discourse.

For users, staying informed and cautious about engagement within these environments remains integral to preventing exploitation. Only through responsible use and continued vigilance can the integrity of digital communities be safeguarded against the overwhelming tide of illegal content and malicious schemes.
