A Salem teenager was arrested on March 18, 2025, after leading authorities on a reckless chase along Interstate 5 in what officials described as a dangerous act of endangerment during morning rush hour. The suspect, 19-year-old Dylan Child, was reportedly clocked speeding at over 100 miles per hour in a construction zone, prompting swift action from local law enforcement.
According to a report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the incident began just before 7 a.m. when a deputy observed a Mitsubishi Eclipse weaving through traffic at a speed of 96 miles per hour near Market Street. In a desperate attempt to evade the law, Child allegedly accelerated to a staggering 107 miles per hour when the deputy activated his lights to pull him over.
As witnessed by an officer conducting a separate traffic stop within the construction zone, the Eclipse sped past, continuing its reckless journey. The officer estimated that the reckless driver was exceeding 100 miles per hour by that point.
Baring witness to this alarming incident, officials deemed it necessary to terminate the chase considering the density of morning traffic and the approaching construction zone. However, deputies employing high-tech law enforcement tools subsequently tracked the vehicle to Scio.
Working collaboratively with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, MCSO identified the driver as Dylan Child. Following the incident, Child reportedly admitted to the reckless driving charges.
