A tragic case has surfaced in Kochi, Kerala, where 15-year-old Mihir Ahammed died by suicide on January 15, 2025, following allegations of severe bullying and ragging at school. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, focusing on the urgent need to confront the issue of bullying within educational institutions.
Mihir's mother, Rajna PM, has come forward with harrowing claims of the abuse her son faced before his death, stating he was subjected to brutal mistreatment by his peers, including being forced to lick toilet seats and having his head pushed down the toilet. "These acts of cruelty broke him in ways we cannot fathom," she shared on social media, detailing the torment endured by her son, who was also targeted for his skin color.
The boy reportedly jumped from the 26th floor of his apartment building shortly after returning home from school on the day of his death. His family has begun gathering evidence of the bullying, claiming they uncovered disturbing information through conversations with friends and from social media messages. Rajna detailed, "Through conversations with his friends, schoolmates, and by reviewing social media messages, we uncovered the horrific reality of what he endured." Following the tragedy, Mihir's family filed complaints to the Chief Minister’s Office and the Director General of Police, seeking justice and accountability.
Public figures, including Indian actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu, have highlighted the necessity of taking swift action to combat bullying. Sharing Mihir's story on her Instagram, she expressed her devastation, stating, “This news has absolutely shattered me! It’s 2025. Yet, we’ve lost another bright young life, snuffed out because of hate.” She emphasized the need for stringent measures against bullying, describing it as "violence—psychological, emotional, and sometimes even physical." Samantha criticized the response, urging accountability beyond mere condolences.
“We have stringent anti-ragging laws, apparently, yet our students continue to suffer in silence, afraid to speak up, afraid of consequences, afraid no one will listen,” she pleaded. Her strong message echoes the calls for real systemic change, stating: “Mihir deserves justice. His parents deserve closure. Strict and immediate action must follow.”
The school Mihir attended, Global Public School (GPS), responded to the allegations by stating they are cooperating with authorities during the investigation. They expressed sadness over the loss but termed the allegations as “baseless,” saying, “We cannot take any action against children without substantiated evidence, as doing so could have tragic repercussions on their mental or physical health.” Meanwhile, the school claims it has protocols for safeguarding student well-being but is now under scrutiny as investigations continue.
While many students have come forward to support Mihir's family and recount incidents of bullying, others associated with the school deny any wrongdoing. A police investigation is presently underway; officers at the Hill Palace Police Station are examining the information gathered and have yet to make any arrests.
Rajna PM, Mihir’s mother, has described efforts by the school to intimidate students who have spoken out. She believes there are attempts to suppress evidence to protect the school's reputation. “There are reports the school is intimidating students to suppress the truth,” she commented, reiteratively demanding justice for her son. “Those responsible for this barbaric act must face the full force of the law, and systemic changes must be made to prevent another tragedy,” she firmly stated.
The family's cries for justice have sparked discussions on social media under the hashtag #JusticeForMihir. Many are calling for legislative reforms surrounding bullying and the enforcement of existing anti-bullying laws. Rajna emphasizes the importance of ensuring Mihir's tragic death is not overlooked, appealing to society and authorities to heed the wake-up call. “Mihir’s death should be a wake-up call. Justice for him means ensuring no other student has to endure the same pain. We owe him so much,” she concluded.
The matter remains sensitive and will continue to develop as public outrage grows and as the investigation progresses. The tragic loss of Mihir Ahammed serves as both a heartbreaking reminder of the deep-rooted issue of bullying in schools and the urgent need for systematic intervention to safeguard vulnerable students.
