A 19-year-old boy was raped by two men in The Lanes, Brighton, early Saturday morning. The chilling incident, which unfolded around 3:30 am near the popular fish and chips shop, Harry Ramsdens, has led to police launching a manhunt for the suspects wanted for questioning.
The victim reported to authorities he was approached by the two unknown men, who then took him to Steine Lane, just four minutes away from where the attack began. The victim, finding the courage to escape the situation, was able to seek help from a passer-by who contacted the police.
Detective Inspector Sean Booth of Sussex Police declared the attack as "deeply concerning" and emphasized their full support for the victim throughout the investigation process. "This is a deeply concerning incident and we are supporting the victim as our inquiries continue," Booth stated.
According to police, Steine Lane is frequented both during the day and at night, serving as a popular short-cut connecting East Street and Old Steine. Booth noted, "We know there were a number of people in the area around the time of the attack. I would urge anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity or recognizes the two men from the CCTV images to come forward. Your information could be key as we work to identify those responsible."
Officers have released surveillance images of the two suspects and are actively appealing for witnesses who may have been around Old Steine at the time of the crime. The investigation is being led by specially trained officers, reflecting the seriousness with which Sussex Police are treating sexual violence cases. Booth reiterated, "There is no place for sexual violence in Sussex, and we take any reports of this nature extremely seriously. Find out more, including how you can seek support, on our website."
The police are encouraging anyone with information to contact them online or by calling 101, referencing Operation Attach.
The community remains shaken as officials ramp up efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and provide support for the victim during this traumatic time. This unfortunate incident highlights concerns about safety at nightlife hotspots, particularly near the vibrant and busy seaside area of Brighton.
Community members are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities as the investigation continues. The compassion and support offered to the victim serve as reminders of the importance of community cooperation during such distressing events.
