Team USA Honors Johnny Gaudreau During World Juniors

Prior to their semifinal match, Team USA celebrates Gaudreau's legacy and achievements with heartfelt tributes.

During the IIHF U20 World Junior Hockey Tournament, Team USA is taking time to honor the life and legacy of former player Johnny Gaudreau. A jersey honoring Gaudreau has been hung prominently in the team’s locker room, symbolizing not only his past achievements but also the essence of play he embodied.

Gaudreau, who played for Team USA during the 2013 World Junior Championship where the team secured the gold medal, remains a revered figure within the organization. His contribution was significant during his tenure on the team, leading the tournament with seven goals, which included delivering a spectacular hat trick during the quarterfinal match against the Czech Republic. Tragically, both Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, died in August 2024 after being struck by a suspected drunk driver during their bicycle ride.

Team USA's captain for the tournament, Ryan Leonard, spoke fondly of Gaudreau's influence and legacy during a tribute video. "Anytime you look over in the corner of the locker room and you see him, it always puts a smile on my face. I know he’s going to have my back out there during the game," Leonard expressed, highlighting the positive impact Gaudreau had on his teammates.

Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny’s wife, actively shared her gratitude for the homage on social media, reposting the tribute with the simple message, "♥️ Thank you 💙 @usahockey." Her acknowledgment adds a deeply personal touch to the team’s tribute.

Johnny Gaudreau’s life was marked by numerous accolades within the sport. Besides his gold medal from the 2013 championship, he also won silver at the 2010 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and earned bronze at the IIHF World Championships. Throughout his international career, Gaudreau accumulated 43 career points, setting the record for Team USA, underscoring his remarkable contributions over five tournaments.

Leonard, who now plays for Boston College like Gaudreau once did, shared cherished memories of playing alongside his predecessor during the previous tournament and remarked on their time spent together, including golf outings with other teammates. "That was one of my favorite memories with Gaudreau," Leonard noted, recalling the bond they shared.

During this tournament, Leonard has made notable contributions of his own, racking up six points (4 goals, 2 assists) over five games. His role not only as captain but as someone who personally connects to Gaudreau’s legacy fosters inspiration within their locker room.

“We emphasis...just going out and having fun and being free,” Leonard explained. This mindset, he believes, channels the spirit of Gaudreau, who was loved for his light-hearted approach to the game. These principles aim to drive Team USA toward yet another championship title.

The USA Hockey team is gearing up for their semifinal matchup against Czechia, set to broadcast on NHL Network Saturday at 7:30 PM. With the goal of clinching back-to-back championships, the team is certainly fueled by the memory and energy of Johnny Gaudreau, seeking to honor his legacy with every play they make on the ice.
