The highly anticipated Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special 2024 aired on December 25, with special performances and festive cheer lighting up the television screens across the UK. This year, the winners of the coveted Christmas crown were none other than drag artist Tayce and professional dancer Kai Widdrington. Their spectacular cha-cha performance to "100 Degrees" by Kylie and Dannii Minogue wowed the judges, earning them four perfect scores of 10.
Judge Craig Revel Horwood was effusive with praise, declaring the dance performance was "absolutely fierce, serving realness, serving fab-u-lous." These words encapsulated the essence of both the performance and the spirit of inclusion within this year’s special. Tayce, who made history as the first drag artist on the show, expressed her excitement, stating, "I cannot wait to sleigh on the Strictly Ballroom floor. My partner and I are going to dance for our lives!"
The festive episode was hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, who ensured the holiday spirit was palpable throughout the broadcast. Other participants included comedian Josh Widdicombe, EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite, racing driver Billy Monger, and Irish presenter Vogue Williams, each competing for the Christmas title with their own unique flair.
Widdicombe, paired with professional dancer Karen Hauer, also brought laughs to the ballroom with their routine. They danced the Charleston to the Glee cast's version of "Let It Snow," with Whiddicombe admitting he was "utterly terrified" prior to taking the dance floor. Despite his nerves, his comedic vibe and Hauer’s captivating moves impressed the judges enough to garner them 36 points.
Judge Anton Du Beke humorously recalled his previous dance partnership, pleasantly reminiscing about his time with contestant Ann Widdecombe back in 2010. "I have to tell you one thing though, it has finally happened, the moment has come. Karen has turned intome. She is the longest-serving professional on Strictly and they give you a Widdicombe, congratulations, you’ve earned it," Du Beke remarked, lighting up the atmosphere with warm nostalgia and humor.
Tamzin Outhwaite and her partner Nikita Kuzmin also impressed the audience with their Viennese waltz to KD Lang’s hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Hallelujah." Du Beke, dedicated to his dessert analogies, commented, "It was like my favourite sherry trifle at Christmas, it was layered, you had the lovely creamy, lovely top, with the beautiful cherry on the top which was your lovely top line…" This playful metaphor brought more laughter and charm to the proceedings, making the viewing experience truly enjoyable.
Billy Monger, who overcame adversity with his remarkable resilience, also took to the floor with Nadiya Bychkova. Their American smooth to "Merry Christmas" by Ed Sheeran and Elton John showcased Monger's spirit and determination, proving he can shine, whether on or off the racetrack. "Dancing in front of Craig Revel Horwood fills me with fear I've never experienced before," he remarked, sharing his trepidation with the viewers as he took on the dance challenge.
One of the standout performances came from former Gladiators star, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, known as Nitro. Eager to swap out his trainers for dancing shoes, he partnered with Nancy Xu and performed street commercial to the Glee cast version of "Christmas Wrapping." "This December I'm gonna light up the dance floor and crank the Christmas spirit all the way up. Let's do this!" Aikines-Aryeetey expressed his excitement, channeling his energy and competitive nature from the sports arena onto the dance floor.
The special opened with all contestants participating in a group routine to "I Love Christmas" from the Scrooge film, creating a festive atmosphere right from the start. It culminated with a closing number to Leona Lewis’s version of "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day," sending viewers off with warmth and holiday joy. The inclusion of Spice Girls member Emma Bunton, who performed the classic song "2 Become 1," added nostalgia and charm to the event, bridging generations of fans.
Judged by Taylor, Motsi Mabuse, Revel Horwood, and Du Beke, this year's Christmas special was not just about competition but about celebrating diversity, joy, and the spirit of the season. Audiences were reminded of the joy of togetherness and laughter through each performance, reinforcing why this annual tradition remains so beloved.
Last year’s Christmas special was won by EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick, creating excitement and anticipation for this year’s festivities. With Tayce and Kai Widdrington’s magnificent win, the love for Strictly Come Dancing continues to shine bright, and fans are already wondering what delights next year’s special will bring.
