Taxpayers Can Check Income Tax Refunds Starting April 23

The Federal Revenue Service announces R$ 339.63 million in refunds for 279,500 taxpayers due on April 30.

Starting April 23, 2025, taxpayers who found themselves entangled in the fine mesh of the 2024 Income Tax and have resolved their issues can now check their refunds. The Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) has made this consultation available through its official website and application, allowing individuals to verify their refund status with ease.

The payment of these refunds is scheduled for April 30, 2025, and will be directly deposited into the bank accounts or Pix keys provided in the declarations. A total of 279,500 taxpayers will receive refunds amounting to R$ 339.63 million. Notably, R$ 180.27 million of this total will be allocated to priority groups, including the elderly, teachers, and individuals with disabilities or serious illnesses. Additionally, those who utilized the CPF Pix key or opted for the pre-filled declaration will also benefit from this distribution.

For those eager to check their refund status, the process is straightforward. Taxpayers can visit the Receita Federal website, navigate to the 'Meu Imposto de Renda' section, click on 'Consultar Minha Restituição', and enter their CPF and date of birth. After confirming they are not robots, they can press 'Consultar' to see their refund status. If a taxpayer does not find their name on the refund list, it is advisable to access the Virtual Taxpayer Assistance Center (e-CAC) to review their declaration statement. Should there be any pending issues, they can submit a corrected declaration and await the next batches of refunds.

What happens if the refund is not credited? In cases where the refund does not reach the informed account—perhaps due to deactivated accounts—the amounts will remain available for redemption for up to one year at Banco do Brasil. Taxpayers can schedule the credit to any bank account they own through the BB Portal or by contacting the bank's Customer Relationship Center. For those in capital cities, the contact number is 4004-0001, while other locations can reach out at 0800-729-0001. There is also a dedicated line for hearing-impaired individuals: 0800-729-0088. If the amount remains unclaimed after one year, taxpayers must request it through the e-CAC Portal, selecting 'Declarações e Demonstrativos' and then 'Meu Imposto de Renda' to proceed with the request for unclaimed refunds.

On April 23, the Receita Federal also announced the release of the consultation for the residual batch of Income Tax refunds, which is set to be paid on the last business day of April—Wednesday, April 30, 2025. The R$ 339.6 million to be distributed this month will benefit 279,500 taxpayers who did not receive their refunds in the standard batches for various reasons. These reasons include resolutions made after the regular calendar, corrections of errors in declarations, taxpayers caught in the fine mesh, and accepted administrative appeals by the Receita Federal.

To find out if you are among those eligible for this payment, simply visit the Receita Federal website, select 'Meu Imposto de Renda', and then click on 'Consultar a Restituição'. However, if you do not fit any of the aforementioned categories, it is likely you will not receive the residual batch in April. The good news is that there is still time to qualify for a Pix from the Receita Federal in the following month.

Looking ahead, the Receita Federal is preparing for the payments of the 2025 declaration, with the first payment scheduled for May 30. This date coincides with the end of the deadline for the 2025 Income Tax. Many taxpayers believe that receiving a refund on May 30 is only possible if they submit their declaration at the start of the period. However, this is not entirely accurate. For instance, in 2024, the deadline for settling accounts with the IRS began on March 17, yet some taxpayers who submitted their reports by May 5 received payments in the first batch.

The Receita Federal typically prioritizes payments based on certain criteria: individuals over 80 years old, followed by those between 60 and 79, individuals with physical or mental disabilities or serious illnesses, teachers whose primary income comes from education, and taxpayers who opted for the pre-filled declaration and Pix payment. This year, the pre-filled declaration was made available with a 13-day delay, but the Receita has confirmed that those who choose this option will have priority in receiving their refunds.

To maximize chances of receiving a refund on May 30, taxpayers should act quickly by submitting their reports as soon as possible and opting for the pre-filled declaration and Pix payment method. The "Guia do Imposto de Renda 2025" by journalist Julia Wiltgen offers a comprehensive guide on how to file your declaration easily and avoid falling into the dreaded fine mesh. This resource is updated with all recent changes to the Income Tax rules, necessary documents, and the best declaration model for each taxpayer.

For those looking for additional support, the guide includes free access to a course on Income Tax, featuring video tutorials where Julia demonstrates how to navigate the Receita's program and handle various situations, from simple to complex. Importantly, this guide and course are available at no cost, ensuring that taxpayers can access the information they need without any financial burden.

As the April deadline approaches, it is crucial for taxpayers to stay informed and take the necessary steps to ensure they receive their refunds promptly. The Receita Federal's efforts to streamline the process and provide clear guidance reflect a commitment to supporting taxpayers during this critical time.
