Tax Refund Tracking Tips For 2025 Season

Many Americans are eager to receive their tax refunds as the IRS begins processing returns for the year.

Tax season has officially commenced for 2025, and millions of Americans are scrambling to file their returns and track down their tax refunds. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has begun accepting tax returns as of January 27, allowing eager taxpayers to submit their paperwork and start anticipating their refunds. For many, the question on everyone's mind is simple yet pressing: "When can I expect my tax refund?"

With tax credits, changing laws, and individual financial situations all playing significant roles, the wait for tax refunds can vary significantly. Although it may feel frustrating, several factors can affect how and when the IRS processes refunds. According to tax professionals and the IRS, most taxpayers can expect to receive their federal tax refund within 10 to 21 days after the IRS accepts their return. If everything is filed electronically and accurately, early filers could see their refunds as soon as mid- to late February.

"The sooner you file your tax return, the sooner you can expect your refund," said Linda Jones, CPA and tax advisor. "Choosing to e-file and selecting direct deposit can greatly speed up the process, especially for individuals who have simple financial situations."

Unfortunately, not all taxpayers can expect prompt refunds. Those claiming certain credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC), may see additional delays until March, as the IRS verifies these claims. This can add to the stress of the tax season, especially for those relying on the timely arrival of their refunds.

For taxpayers uncertain about the status of their refund, the IRS offers the "Where's My Refund?" online tool. This resource allows individuals to track their refund status once filed, providing updates on whether the return is being processed, approved, or sent. To access the tool, taxpayers need their social security number or individual taxpayer ID, filing status, and the exact refund amount listed on their return. Individuals can find this tool on the IRS website or through the IRS2Go mobile app.

What does the refund status mean? The IRS categorizes refund status updates as follows:

  • Return Received: The IRS is processing your return.
  • Refund Approved: The IRS has approved your refund, which will be issued on the designated date.
  • Refund Sent: The IRS has sent your refund either directly to your bank account or via mail.

Once the IRS sends the refund, taxpayers should allow up to five days for it to appear in their bank account if opting for direct deposit, whereas checks sent via mail could take several weeks to reach their destination.

Tax professionals also recommend ensuring all necessary documents are ready before filing, as missing information can delay the process. Essential items include W-2 forms, 1099s, records of investments, and relevant deduction letters from the IRS. Filing electronically using accurate tax preparation software can help minimize errors, which may lead to delays if the IRS requires corrections or additional information.

The IRS Free File service is also available for individual taxpayers earning $84,000 or less, providing accessible guidance for those who may need assistance. Using this service simplifies the process and can prevent issues arising from common mistakes.

Another important aspect is the filing deadline. Most taxpayers must submit their tax returns by April 15. If individuals cannot meet this deadline, they can file for an extension using Form 4868, which allows extra time until October 15 to submit their returns, provided they pay any due taxes by the original deadline.

For those still unsure about filing, the IRS maintains resources to help find certified tax professionals or to navigate filing options through their Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers. Consulting with a qualified tax professional can help smooth out the process and potentially maximize returns.

Even with preparations, some refunds may be delayed. The IRS warns taxpayers not to expect refunds within three weeks of submitting their returns, owing to various factors affecting processing time.

With tax season now well underway, many taxpayers are eagerly awaiting their refunds, which provide relief or opportunities for spending. Patience and preparation, coupled with the right tools and advice, can ease the waiting period and help taxpayers navigate their financial responsibilities more effectively.
