Tata Motors is set to boost Bengaluru's public transport system with the latest order for 148 electric buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). This initiative marks another step toward sustainable urban mobility, following the successful delivery of 921 electric buses.
TML Smart City Mobility Solutions, Tata Motors' wholly owned subsidiary, will handle the supply, operation, and maintenance of these Tata Starbus EV 12-metre low-floor electric buses for the next 12 years. This additional order showcases the increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) as cities strive to achieve greener transportation solutions.
The new electric buses join the existing fleet, most of which have already been delivered and are operating with impressive uptime rates exceeding 95%. This smooth operation is attributed to the buses’ advanced battery systems and next-gen design, making them suitable for the intra-city commute across Bengaluru.
Commenting on this achievement, Ramachandran R., IAS, Managing Director of BMTC, emphasized the positive performance of Tata’s existing electric buses. He stated, "The performance of the existing Tata electric buses has been exceptional, aligning perfectly with our commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation. The larger e-bus fleet will significantly enhancing our capacity to provide eco-friendly, comfortable and reliable services to the citizens of Bengaluru." This quote captures the growing commitment to sustainability within public transportation.
To date, Tata Motors’ electric buses have cumulatively logged over 2.5 crore kilometres within Bengaluru, contributing to significant reductions in tailpipe emissions. The growing fleet has led to the avoidance of approximately 14,000 tons of CO2 emissions, addressing the pressing environmental concerns faced by urban areas.
The Tata Starbus EV, with its cutting-edge architecture and zero-emission technology, has made it clear how integral electric buses can be to urban transport. The buses are developed with safety and comfort as prime focuses, ensuring not only environmental benefits but also enhancing passenger experience and convenience.
Tata Motors' push for electric mobility reflects broader trends across India, as more cities recognize the need for cleaner, more sustainable transport. Bengaluru’s commitment to integrating electric buses is part of larger national and global efforts to combat climate change and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
With the increase of electric vehicle adoption, other cities may soon follow Bengaluru's lead, recognizing the dual benefits of improving public transport and addressing environmental sustainability. Tata Motors continues to be at the forefront of this transition, making significant strides toward greener urban mobility.
These developments not only represent progress for Tata Motors and BMTC but also serve as inspiring examples for urban centers throughout India and beyond. The collaboration reflects dedication toward innovative transport solutions and the commitment to providing residents with eco-friendly options for their daily commutes.
