Tasmania has secured its position as the host of the Supercars Championship for another three years through a substantial $6 million deal, ensuring the continuation of this premier sporting event at Symmons Plains Raceway. The announcement came from Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, on March 18, 2025, marking another milestone for motorsport enthusiasts across the state.
This new agreement not only emphasizes the importance of motorsport to Tasmania but also strengthens the long-standing partnership between the government and the Supercars Championship, which has been active since 2004. The funding includes a three-year commitment amounting to more than $4 million, which is aimed at supporting various Supercars events, including the upcoming Tasmania Super 440, set to take place from May 9 to 11, 2025.
“This deal includes a new three-year agreement, valued at $4,155,000, to help Supercars events thrive through 2027,” said Minister Duigan at the media briefing held on the Symmons Plains pit straight, flanked by racing drivers Thomas Randle and Cooper Murray.
Not only has the funding been directed to the championship events, but $1.8 million will also be allocated to the owners of Symmons Plains Raceway, Motorsports Tasmania. This money is intended for mandatory safety and amenity improvements, which are needed to maintain the venue as Tasmania's premier motorsport destination.
“The support from the Tasmanian Government has been key to ensuring we continue delivering high-quality racing and entertainment,” said Shane Howard, CEO of Supercars. “Tasmania has some of the most passionate motorsport fans, and we are thrilled to be returning to Symmons Plains for the foreseeable future.”
Minister Duigan highlighted the anticipated excitement surrounding the 2025 Super 440 event, which will feature the highly awaited return of the Top Ten Shootout Qualifying for the first time since 2010, complementing the inaugural Super2 Top Five Shootout. This year’s event promises to exceed 200km more racing than it did previously, igniting the passion of motorsport fans across the state.
“We look forward to welcoming over 20,000 interstate and international visitors to the event over the next three years, providing significant economic and social benefits to Tasmania,” added Duigan. This influx of visitors from outside the state is expected to create both excitement and revenue, impacting local businesses positively.
Tasmania has become accustomed to holding major Supercars events, with more than one million fans attending races at Symmons Plains since 1995. The renewed deal ensures this legacy continues, providing opportunities for growth and the establishment of new traditions within the motorsport community.
To boost engagement and excitement prior to the event, the Tasmanian government is organizing motorsport fan activation on May 7, 2025, at Hobart’s Princes Wharf No. 1. This event will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will feature several race cars, drivers, and fan activities, connecting the community with their motorsport heroes.
Through its 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future, the government remains committed to attracting significant events such as the Supercars Championship, which plays a key role in showcasing Tasmania on the national stage.
The news of the deal not only excites local fans but also reaffirms Tasmania’s reputation as a significant player on the motorsport calendar. The prospective benefits for the community, both economically and socially, are immense as the preparations continue for what promises to be spectacular future races.
