Tampa Bay Buccaneers Promote Josh Grizzard To Offensive Coordinator

The team confirms internal appointment to strengthen offensive strategies for the upcoming season

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced the promotion of Josh Grizzard to offensive coordinator, reflecting their strategy to cultivate talent from within after he spent one successful season as the team’s pass game coordinator. Grizzard's contributions helped the Buccaneers to achieve the NFL's best third-down conversion rate of 51.11% during the 2024 season, as well as ranking No. 3 overall in total yards and No. 4 for points scored.

Grizzard, who is 34 years old, now steps up to replace Liam Coen, the former offensive coordinator who took the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. The Buccaneers have experienced instability at the offensive coordinator position, marking their third hire within as many years. The decision to promote Grizzard signals the team's commitment to consistency after they previously lost Dave Canales to the Carolina Panthers following the 2023 season.

“Josh is bright and innovative and was instrumental in our game planning and play design over the last year,” said Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles. “After interviewing several outstanding candidates throughout this process, it became apparent our best option was right here within our organization. We had tremendous success on offense last season, and Grizzard’s insights have shown how we can build on those strengths.”

Before joining the Buccaneers, Grizzard's coaching credentials were solidified during his seven-year tenure with the Miami Dolphins, where he served as both the quality control coach and wide receivers coach. His extensive coaching experience has equipped him with the tools necessary to drive the team forward.

Grizzard’s promotion follows his first season with Tampa Bay, where the franchise concluded the regular season with a commendable 10-7 record, winning the NFC South for the fourth consecutive year. Quarterback Baker Mayfield thrived as he ended the season with 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdown throws, becoming only the third quarterback ever to achieve such heights, albeit tying the league high with 16 interceptions.

During his previous stint as pass game coordinator, Grizzard's influence was evident. Not only did he help orchestrate the offense, but he was also responsible for significant aspects of the game, such as third-down strategy. Grizzard's previous role allowed him to gain valuable experience from former coordinators, including Coen, ensuring he is well-prepared to take the reins.

The Buccaneers offense ranked favorably across various metrics, finishing third with 4,257 passing yards and second with 41 passing touchdowns. This offensive prowess was heavily attributed to Grizzard's strategic contributions, blending effective play calling with player development.

Grizzard’s relatively recent ascent from the collegiate ranks to the NFL has been remarkable. A Yale graduate, he began his coaching career as a student assistant before making his way to Duke University as a graduate assistant. His early experiences coupled with his notable tenure at Miami were foundational to his preparation for his new role.

Maintaining continuity amid coaching transitions can be pivotal for team dynamics, particularly as players adjust to new systems and philosophies. Grizzard’s longstanding familiarity with the existing roster and the structural framework of Tampa Bay's offensive strategies positions him well to facilitate this seamless transition.

Reflecting on his time with the Buccaneers, it’s clear Grizzard's promotion is welcomed within the organization. His well-regarded stature among the coaching staff reflects their belief in his ability to sustain and potentially improve upon last season's accomplishments.

“Grizz provided great ideas on how we can build on our offensive success,” Bowles added, highlighting the collaborative environment Grizzard cultivated during his tenure. “His continuity with our players and staff will be important as we seek to assert our dominance within the division.”

The Buccaneers’ commitment to their homegrown talent stands as part of their broader strategy to establish stability and consistently perform at the highest level. Josh Grizzard's ascent to offensive coordinator should energize both the team and its supporters as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Looking forward, fans and team officials alike are eager to see how Grizzard's vision will translate onto the field, particularly as NFL defenses adapt to the changing dynamics of modern football. With high expectations following the franchise's bestselling offensive performances, all eyes will be on Grizzard as he steps up to lead the offense.
