Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal is recovering in a hospital after collapsing during a local match on March 24, 2025. While leading the Mohammedan Sporting Club in a game against Shinepukur Cricket Club at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP), the 36-year-old experienced severe chest pain, prompting immediate medical intervention. Tamim was initially taken to KPJ Specialized Hospital, where doctors found irregularities in his blood test.
According to BCB chief physician Debashish Chowdhury, it was reported that Tamim exhibited a minor issue after undergoing an ECG. However, after he attempted to return to the field, the pain recurred, and doctors confirmed he had suffered a major heart attack. Tamim was then swiftly transported back to a closer facility, where he underwent emergency treatment. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released a statement confirming that he had suffered a cardiac arrest, and he received the necessary emergency medical care that included a successful angiogram procedure to address a blockage in one of his heart's arteries.
Tamim’s condition was described as critical upon his arrival, necessitating surgery to insert stents to improve blood flow. As of now, he is under close observation in the coronary care unit at Fazilatunnesa Hospital. Afterward, club official Tariqul Islam provided a positive update, stating, “He is now better. He talked to family members and also walked briefly at the hospital.”
The cricket community is rallying around Tamim, with many expressing their heartfelt wishes for his recovery. Prominent teammate Shakib Al Hasan, whose birthday coincidentally fell on the same day, unhesitatingly reached out to wish Tamim a speedy recovery, stating, “Please pray that my brother Tamim recovers quickly and returns to the game!” Furthermore, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh also posted, “You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger, this will be no different. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong.”
This sudden health crisis has shocked the sports community, as Tamim had an illustrious career, representing Bangladesh in 391 matches across different formats from 2007 to 2023. He scored over 15,000 runs and is notably the sole Bangladeshi player to achieve centuries in all three international formats. Also known for his elegant style of play, Tamim's record includes over 8,000 runs in ODIs and 5,000 runs in Tests, securing a loyal fan base due to his impressive abilities on the field.
The supportive responses from the public have illustrated Tamim's significant impact on cricket in Bangladesh. His contributions to the game have left an indelible mark, and the heartfelt prayers from fans and players alike come as a testament to the deep affection and respect the cricketing fraternity holds for him.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board also noted the importance of swift medical action in this instance. BCB president Faruque Ahmed expressed gratitude to the medical team by stating, “We are very thankful to all the medics and specialists for their swift actions in this critical situation.”
As updates on Tamim’s condition are expected to continue, many are hopeful for his recovery and return to the sport he loves. As the cricket community holds its breath, the message remains clear: their prayers and support are firmly behind one of its stars.
