HBO's new science fiction series Dune: Prophecy has wrapped up its first season, which has already been greenlit for a second. Heading toward the final episode, tension at the royal court has escalated, particularly involving Emperor Javicco Corrino, played by Mark Strong. It seems he is fully committing to the advice of soldier Desmond Hart, enacted by Travis Fimmel, abandoning his previous reliance on the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Observing Javicco's shifting loyalties, Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen, portrayed by Emily Watson, turns to Sister Francesca, the Emperor's former lover. Francesca's unexpected return shakes up the dynamics as the conclusion of Season 1 looms.
Game Rant had the opportunity to speak with accomplished actress Tabu, who plays the complex role of Sister Francesca. Ahead of the series finale, Tabu reflected on her character's impact and relationships with Javicco, Valya, and her estranged son Constantine, portrayed by Josh Heuston. This transcript of our conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.
When discussing Francesca's sudden return to court after her long absence, Tabu described her character as unknowingly stepping back onto the stage of turmoil. "What's going on in her mind is Valya has summoned her, there is an issue, and the Emperor needs to be handled," Tabu explained. She elaborated on how shocked Francesca is to find out the full extent of the situation, including her ignorance about Sister Kasha's death.
The history between Francesca and Valya adds depth to their interactions, particularly as recalled through flashbacks when they were close. "I think they bond over the Sisterhood and their motives. Because we haven't seen their friendship progressing on screen, we really don't know as an audience, which is why Francesca's presence feels very different from the other sisters. She is very instrumental with Javicco, as Valya knows she has the power of imprinting," said Tabu, highlighting the complexity of their relationship as the plot thickens.
Fans are eager to know if any romantic feelings linger between Francesca and Javicco. Tabu expressed belief there is still love there, saying, "She wants to protect him, save him, and help him get out of this whole mess." Tabu articulated her desire to see Francesca confront Valya about their fraught history when she declared, "I would want to see her retribution."
Constantine's complicated relationship with Francesca also surfaced during the conversation. "For him, definitely, because he's at the receiving end. He’s been abandoned, and he questions her motives, saying, 'Your Sisterhood always has a plan, so what was your purpose for having me?'" said Tabu, illustrating the challenges Francesca faces as she attempts to reconnect with her son.
Tabu remarked on the challenge of portraying someone intricately tied to the Sisterhood yet distinctly separate from it. "I quite enjoyed it because it required me to shoot for fewer days. It was very, very long and extensive for the others, but I think, because it was short, it was very potent. Coming at the end as a guest with strong impact feels effective," she reflected, explaining how Francesca's individuality adds to the narrative.
Addressing her admiration for the entire series, Tabu observed the chemistry between her character and younger Francesca, who is played by Charithra Chandran. "We had long meetings discussing our characters and drawings from each other, and she’s done very well for herself," Tabu remarked with pride. Chandran's performance plays an important role as she develops the backstory of Francesca's character.
Sharing her excitement about the show's buildup, Tabu expressed joy at experiencing the episodes as both actor and viewer, discussing how her family hosted screenings led by her nephew and his friends, showcasing the fresh storytelling of the Dune universe. “It's so fascinating to engage with the characters and share our experiences afterwards,” she said.
Despite the serious tones found within the series, Tabu described her time on set as one filled with professionalism and camaraderie. "The atmosphere and ambiance on set were not heavy at all. The people working on this project are accomplished and know how to strike a balance between work and enjoying the process," she stated, adding humor to her experience alongside Mark Strong and the rest of the cast.
Finally, Tabu reflected upon the series' ability to mirror societal themes through its narrative. “Literature has always been relevant to the times we live in... the human condition, and aspirations for power have been constant threads throughout history," she posited, emphasizing the timelessness inherent to the Dune storyline.
Fans can look forward to seeing Tabu as Sister Francesca back on screen during the final episodes of Dune: Prophecy, streaming on Max soon.
