Syria Faces Unrest As Clashes Erupt Post-Assad

Violence intensifies with police ambushes and sectarian protests amid fears of Islamist governance.

Syria is experiencing one of its most volatile periods since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad, with violent clashes erupting between Islamist factions and regime loyalists, culminating in tragic incidents such as the recent ambush of police forces. Reports indicate fourteen members of the Syrian police were killed by loyalists to the ousted regime during an ambush carried out on the morning of December 26, 2023, highlighting the growing unrest triggered by the political upheaval.

The police, under the newly installed transitional administration, vowed to crack down on any remnants of Assad's government aiming to destabilize the region. Syria's interior minister stated via Telegram, "Anyone who dares to undermine Syria's security or endanger the lives of its citizens will be dealt with severely." Further emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintain order, local police imposed overnight curfews, particularly affecting cities like Homs where protests were widely reported.

These demonstrations, predominantly among the Alawite community—historically loyal to Assad—arose following social media circulation of videos depicting militants desecration of Alawite shrines. Such videos have stirred resentment and fear among Alawites, who demand protection against potential retaliatory violence from the newly empowered Islamist factions, particularly Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Earlier unrest linked to the embattled Alawite minority led to protests across several regions, including Tartous and Latakia. Tensions are particularly high since rumors spread about violence being directed at Alawites, with the new ruling factions seen as potentially oppressive due to their radical Islamist ideologies. Activists claim these events could be precursors to increased sectarian violence, leading to possible retaliatory measures across different ethnic and religious segments.

Notably, the transitional administration led by HTS has reiterated its commitment to protect the rights of minority groups, though many are skeptical about its intentions following the widespread sectarian conflict sparked by the fall of Assad. The government maintains the narrative of unity and protection of diversity within Syria, as echoed by the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, which stated: "Our country, Syria, is rich in diversity—a historical wealth with national and societal value... Protecting Syria's diversity and national wealth is...an important foundation for building a strong Syria." This statement encapsulates the urgency for unity amid recent violent incidents.

Protesters have also raised concerns over the treatment of former soldiers affiliated with Assad’s regime, calling for the release of imprisoned soldiers who face possible executions under the new order. It surfaces during demonstrations where calls for accountability were met with violence from the HTS, which reportedly suppressed protests forcefully. These skirmishes have resulted in multiple injuries among protestors, particularly among Alawite demonstrators, reflecting the dire consequences of supporting the previous regime.

Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic scenes; gunfire rang out as Alawite protestors clashed with HTS forces, with reports of serious injuries and at least one fatality confirmed during these altercations. The precarious situation emphasizes growing fears of reprisal attacks against Alawites and has sparked broader conversations about the inclusive governance model HTS purports to uphold.

While the current regime vows to pursue minority rights, community leaders express concerns about whether HTS, rooted root within radical Islamist ideology, can genuinely transform Syria’s political future. Such skepticism stems from decades of embittered sectarian legacies fueled by the Assad regime and its oppressive tactics toward various religious and ethnic factions.

The consequences of these events have led to increased dislocation among the local populace, with many returning citizens confronted by shocking devastation as they try to rebuild their lives. Reports highlight families displaced for years attempt to reacclimatize to their ancestral homes, only to find the remnants of their existence gone. One resident, Hajjah Zakia Daemessaid, recounted her heartbreak saying, "My husband and I spent 43 years of hard work saving money to build our home, only to find all of it has gone to waste."

The uncertainty on the ground worsens as violence continues to plague various regions. Allegations of harassment against members of the minority groups have been reported, and the government is repeatedly pressed on how it plans to restore stability. Amid these developments, observers are increasingly concerned about the potential for large-scale sectarian violence, as HTS grapples with its dual agenda—projecting strength domestically and appeasing its radical base.

Despite the transitional government's insistence on establishing modern governance structures, the reality depicted on the streets signals potential turmoil brewing beneath the surface. With deep divisions between the Alawite minority and the newly risen Islamist factions, the need for dialogue remains urgent to prevent the spiraling descent back toward faceless violence, as Syria struggles to recover from years of devastating civil discord.
