Syracuse Hit By Major Winter Storm Challenging Residents

Travel advisories issued as snowfall reaches up to 12 inches, prompting local safety measures.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A strong lake effect snow system has significantly impacted Syracuse and surrounding areas this weekend, prompting travel advisories and warnings from local officials. The National Weather Service (NWS) has expanded Lake Effect Snow Warnings, indicating snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour. Many residents are bracing for hazardous driving conditions as accumulation may reach up to 12 inches, particularly around the western Adirondacks and north of the Thruway.

Beginning Saturday, ominous forecasts warned of heavy snowfall, creating treacherous conditions across Onondaga and Cayuga counties. The travel advisories were issued around noon on Saturday, urging drivers to exercise caution, with specific warnings of whiteout conditions and reduced visibility. Residents were reminded to keep their sidewalks clear of snow to maintain safety, following advice from local officials.

According to reports, parts of Syracuse accumulated more than 12 inches of snow, leading residents like Bernard Cannon to voice their experiences, stating, "It's manageable, like you said. Definitely manageable," to Spectrum News 1. Cannon emphasized the importance of taking the cleanup slowly to avoid injury.

The NWS warned of blowing and drifting snow, estimating the storm would have the most severe effects on untreated roads, potentially leading to accidents. Vehicles have already been reported going off-road, including incidents involving city Centro buses. With wind gusts surpassing 30 mph, visibility is significantly compromised, adding to travelers' concerns.

During Sunday morning, the lake effect snow remained predominantly north of Syracuse across Oswego and Northern Oneida counties. Forecasts indicated the storm would shift southward by afternoon, impacting Syracuse and gradually weakening through the day. Forecasters predict additional snowfall of 2 to 6 inches for northern suburbs, with significant delays likely across major routes.

Warmth will be fleeting as high temperatures struggle to reach the low 20s, with wind chills making it feel even colder. The extended forecast remains bleak, with temperatures expected to plummet to 11°F by Wednesday night. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates regularly and prepare for worsening conditions.

Syracuse isn’t the only region facing difficulties. Nearby counties, such as Cayuga County, issued similar warnings, specifying the advisory would last until noon Sunday. The snowstorm’s impacts were evident as cars slid off roads throughout Saturday morning, raising local concerns about public safety on the roads.

Reports from the NWS indicate the lake-effect warning for Onondaga is still active, highlighting the need for protective measures for travelers. Road maintenance crews are working diligently to keep major arteries clear, but the heavy snowfall is complicatiing their efforts.

For those needing to drive, it is imperative to monitor the latest weather reports, as the situation can evolve rapidly. The NWS recommends anyone venturing out should travel with caution, allowing for extra time if travel is necessary. Clear snow and ice from vehicles before moving to prevent accidents on the roads.

Overall, the current winter storm emphasizes the challenges for residents and travelers alike. Persistent snowfall and cold temperatures are shaping up to be the new normal for the coming days. Keeping informed and safe should remain the community’s priority through this frigid stretch.
