Sydney Sweeney Stars In Split Fiction Film Adaptation

The actress joins a talented team for the movie adaptation of the acclaimed video game Split Fiction.

Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a film adaptation of the hit video game Split Fiction. According to Variety, the movie will be directed by Jon M. Chu, known for Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights. The script is being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writing duo behind Deadpool and Wolverine. It has not yet been confirmed whether Sweeney will be playing Zoe or Mio.

The project is being produced by Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson’s Story Kitchen (formerly dj2 Entertainment), in partnership with Jon M. Chu’s Electric Somewhere. They are currently showing the project to different studios, with Sweeney also on board as an executive producer.

The game, developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts, was released on March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows, and on June 5, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2. The plot follows in the spirit of It Takes Two. Mio and Zoe are contrasting writers—one specializes in sci-fi and the other in fantasy—who become trapped in their own stories after being connected to a machine designed to steal their creative ideas. To break free with their memories intact, they must rely on each other, mastering a variety of abilities and overcoming diverse challenges as they jump between sci-fi and fantasy worlds in this unexpected tale of friendship.

According to Hazelight, the game sold more than two million copies in its first week after launch. Filming for Split Fiction is expected to begin soon, but no release date has been set yet.

Sydney Sweeney has been cast in a video game movie adaptation created by the director of Wicked and the writers for Deadpool and Wolverine. Some of Sweeney's best movies have come out in just the last few years, from her romantic comedy with Glen Powell Anyone But You, to her nun-focused horror movie Immaculate. At the same time that her career has been taking off, so too has the success of video game movie adaptations. Recent hits like A Minecraft Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showcase their popularity through strong box office numbers.

Now, Variety reports that Sweeney will be starring in an adaptation of Hazelight Studios' 2025 co-op action adventure game Split Fiction. Jon M. Chu, director of both Wicked movies, will be directing, while Deadpool and Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are also attached. Story Kitchen's Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson will executive produce, alongside Chu for his company, Electric Somewhere. Sweeney will also serve as an executive producer on the movie, although it remains unknown which of the two lead characters she'll be playing, Zoe or Mio.

What Sweeney's casting means for Split Fiction's movie adaptation is a strong choice for the new video game movie. Split Fiction follows the story of authors Zoe and Mio, who become trapped in their respective fantasy and sci-fi stories, forced to navigate both worlds together to escape. The game is a co-op experience, meaning two players are required to play the game. It focuses on solving puzzles and working together in order to progress, while also telling a story about the importance of human creativity. Split Fiction's side-stories and other optional content make the game quite expansive as well.

Upon release in March 2025, it received critical acclaim, with a movie adaptation confirmed two weeks later. Legendary’s Gundam movie is moving forward with Sydney Sweeney in talks to star. Could she be playing fan-favorite character Sayla Mass? With Sweeney's casting in the film, it seems like some major stars could end up attached as the film continues its development. Although it's unclear who she'll be portraying, the actor most fits the look of Zoe, who wrote the fantasy story. Even so, there's no way of knowing how the casting will play out until the movie is further along in development.

Given Split Fiction's reviews being so positive, though, the movie has a lot to live up to when rebuilding the game world for the big screen. Our take on Sweeney's casting in Split Fiction is that the movie could be another big step for her career. Although it's unclear which role she'll be playing in the adaptation, Sweeney's role in Split Fiction could make for another highly memorable part of her movie career. Not only was the game praised for its gameplay, but also for an emotional story with plenty of interesting themes and ideas explored. If done right, the adaptation could help elevate video game movies to new heights, with the actor helping to do so with her role in the story.

The Split Fiction video game has been released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. It will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.
