Sydney FC Edges Wellington Phoenix With Late Winner

A thrilling match concludes with Sydney FC scoring late to secure victory at Leichhardt Oval.

Sydney FC created dramatic moments at Leichhardt Oval, sealing their victory over the Wellington Phoenix with a last-minute goal to win 2-1 on March 15, 2025. The match unfolded with the Phoenix largely dominating possession, but the Sky Blues capitalized on their limited opportunities, scoring twice from their only shots on target.

Wellington Phoenix head coach Paul Temple expressed his frustration post-game, feeling his team was robbed of points due to the late outcome. \"It feels like a massive injustice,\" Temple declared, emphasizing the team deserved at least one point for their efforts. Despite being reduced to ten players late with Tiana Jaber receiving her second yellow card, Temple noted the strength of his team throughout the match.

Initially matched with Sydney FC's resilience, the Phoenix started strong and created opportunities, including two shots just minutes after kickoff. Rookie Sydney goalkeeper Jasmine Black showcased her skills, making key saves to deny Manaia Elliott and Alyssa Whinham early on.

It wasn't until deep in first-half stoppage time when Sydney FC found their breakthrough. Madeleins Caspers, cutting inside the box, took advantage of the Phoenix defense lapse to score. This moment shifted the match's momentum as they led 1-0 at halftime.

After the break, the Phoenix rallied back with determination, making tactical adjustments and substitutions to regain control. The changes proved effective as Annalie Longo assisted Elliott, bringing the score to 1-1 with Elliott's goal at the 75th minute.

Just when it seemed the Phoenix would secure a valuable point, disaster struck. Jaber was sent off after receiving her second yellow card, leaving her team at a disadvantage for the final stages of the match.

With the game heading toward its conclusion, Sydney FC found themselves bolstered by the opportunity to push forward. Late in injury time, Princess Ibini struck the decisive blow, curling home the winner to seal the match at 2-1.

The defeat leaves Wellington Phoenix struggling to find their footing, sitting eighth on the league ladder and just two points outside of the playoff positions with only four matches remaining. Temple expressed concern about their playoff aspirations, stressing the need to win at least three of their last four games to stay competitive. \"We need to back ourselves to win our home games and see if we can get something on the road,\" he remarked on his team's challenge moving forward.

Looking beyond this match, Temple remains hopeful for his squad's chances of reaching the finals, acknowledging the league's unpredictable nature. \"We missed our chance to get inside the six tonight, but there’s still no reason why we can’t make it,\" he concluded.

While the Phoenix head home shortly, they will turn their attention quickly to their next challenge against Central Coast Mariners at Porirua Park next Saturday.
