The Sydenham Bypass is set to undergo significant resurfacing works starting this weekend, according to announcements from TrafficwatchNI and the Department of Transport. The city-bound side of the bypass will be closed between the Tillysburn junction and the M3, beginning at 4am on Saturday and lasting until 6am on Monday.
This round of resurfacing is part of a larger initiative to upgrade and improve the road conditions for safety and effective traffic management. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the marked diversion routes to minimize travel disruptions during this period. "Please allow extra time for your journeys and follow the sign-posted diversionary routes," TrafficwatchNI instructed.
The work is expected to continue outside of weekends as well, with additional lane closures taking place weeknights from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, Monday through Thursday. The Belfast-bound carriageway will also be impacted during these times, alongside four more weekends of closures following the same night schedule.
Weekend closures are contingent on weather conditions, and the Department of Transport will keep the public informed as specific dates approach. For safety reasons, some weekend and overnight lane closures will also be required on the country-bound lanes to protect both the road workers and the traveling public. "Some weekend and overnight lane closures will also be required on the country-bound lanes to insure the safety of road workers and the travelling public," the Department stated.
This substantial work aims to complete by early March 2025, weather permitting. Potential maintenance plans suggest regular monitoring and updates will be available throughout the duration of the project. "Completion is expected by early March 2025, subject to favorable weather conditions," affirmed the Department of Transport.
Local residents and commuters should stay alert for announcements and updates related to traffic patterns, as the resurfacing works are intended to benefit the overall infrastructure, enhancing comfort and safety for travelers. During the construction phase, using alternative routes when possible could help ease traffic congestion.
Overall, these roadway improvements not only promise smoother journeys but also demonstrate the commitment to maintaining transport safety and efficiency within the region. Motorists are encouraged to remain patient and attentive as these necessary upgrades are executed.
