Switzerland Draws 1-1 Against Northern Ireland In Friendly Match

Despite dominating possession, Switzerland's winless streak extends to eight games following a disappointing display against Northern Ireland.

In a friendly match held on March 21, 2025, the Swiss national football team faced Northern Ireland in Belfast, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Despite dominating possession with over 80% and making more than 500 passes, the Swiss side continued its streak of games without a win, extending to eight matches since its last victory in June 2024.

Northern Ireland took the lead in the 16th minute, courtesy of a well-placed free-kick by Isaac Price. The foul leading to the free-kick was committed by Swiss debutant Stefan Gartenmann, who misjudged a long ball and fouled Lee Bonis near the penalty area. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, in his sixth match as the starting keeper, faced criticism for his positioning as he seemed caught off guard by the shot that curled into the net.

In response, Switzerland equalized just 13 minutes later. Vincent Sierro scored from a header following a corner taken by Ricardo Rodriguez. Sierro, stepping up in the absence of the sidelined stars, Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji, demonstrated his attacking prowess while also marking his debut goal for the national team.

Coach Murat Yakin utilized the match as an opportunity to test new players, introducing Lucas Blondel and Alvyn Sanches, among others, later in the game. Despite the tactical changes, Switzerland struggled offensively, failing to convert their ball dominance into goal-scoring opportunities. They managed a total of only two shots on goal throughout the match.

“It’s normal that not everything will click immediately when there are so many new players,” Sierro remarked post-match. He acknowledged the team's desire to win but noted the need for improvement in their performance. The frustration was palpable as the Swiss team sought to find their footing against a well-organized Northern Irish defense.

Yakin also noted the many positive aspects of the match despite the outcome. He reflected on the dominance in possession and the need for precision in the final third, emphasizing the importance of building upon their performance as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.

The atmosphere at Windsor Park saw 18,500 fans, despite reports of a lower attendance figure later in the match. The energy remained subdued as the fans experienced a night where promising moves by the Swiss attack failed to convert into tangible results. With Xhaka recently becoming a father for the third time and Akanji nursing an injury, the absence of key players was felt throughout the match.

Looking ahead, Switzerland will aim to break their winless streak when they face Luxembourg in St. Gallen on March 25, 2025. The team is eager to bounce back and find their offensive rhythm to secure a much-needed victory.
