Authorities in the Suwałki region are moving forward with significant infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the safety and comfort of residents. Two separate projects have been announced which will improve pedestrian and cyclist routes as well as reconstruct important road segments.
The City of Suwałki is set to construct a new pedestrian and bicycle pathway along Utrata Street, extending from Waryńskiego Street to Łąkowa Street. This project is not just about building paths; it also aims to improve the safety of crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists. The municipality has issued a call for bids, with submissions accepted until February 21, 2025. The winning contractor will have six months from the signing of the contract to complete the work.
According to the city’s announcements, these planned improvements are particularly geared toward enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The construction of the separated pedestrian-bicycle path, which will be distanced from the roadway, along with well-marked and lit crossings, is expected to significantly bolster the safety and comfort of Suwałki’s residents. "Planned work aims particularly to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists," emphasized city officials.
Meanwhile, the Powiatowy Zarząd Dróg (County Road Authority) has also launched a tender for the reconstruction of 1.184 kilometers of the district road no. 1129B, which runs from Wiżajny to Ejszeryszki and Rutka Tartak within the Wiżajny municipality. This stretch is one of the final segments of the road requiring modernization and is slated for substantial improvements.
Last year, this same road saw significant upgrades which were officially inaugurated on February 12, 2024. Approximately 12 million zł was spent on modernizing the stretches from Wiżajny to Rutka Tartak, covering lengths totaling 5.2 kilometers. The upgrades included two main segments—2.61 kilometers within the municipality of Wiżajny and 2.55 kilometers to Rutka Tartak.
Now, with the recent announcement, the county has secured 50% funding from the Rządowy Fundusz Rozwoju Dróg (Government Road Development Fund) for this latest stretch. The total estimated cost for the reconstruction project is around 2.561 million zł. The work will incorporate various construction activities, including earthworks, excavations, and the construction of new roadway structures.
This latest tender has submission deadlines set for February 25 at 9:00 AM, with the completion of the project expected to extend over 230 days once the contractor is chosen.
These projects reflect the local government’s commitment to promoting safety on local roads and creating more accommodating environments for all forms of transport. The improvements are not merely infrastructural upgrades; they represent significant steps toward increasing the quality of life for the residents of Suwałki and fostering safer, more active community lifestyles.
Through these developments, authorities hope to reduce accidents, promote healthy transportation alternatives, and attract more visitors and residents to the area. Better pathways and reconstructed roads will incentivize walking and cycling, aligning with broader efforts to encourage sustainable transit methods within the community.
Overall, this dual approach to infrastructure development—enhancing pedestrian-cyclist safety and modernizing key roadways—underscores Suwałki's vision for progressive community planning and development. Keeping residents safe on their travels and providing modern transportation options is at the forefront of these projects, poised to create lasting benefits for the Suwałki region.
