Cobre Las Cruces (CLC), a Spanish mining company, is leading the charge on innovation as it works on extracting valuable resources like cobalt from mine waste. This initiative is part of the EU-funded RAWMINA project, emphasizing the importance of sourcing critical raw materials (CRM) ethically and sustainably. This innovative approach leverages advanced technologies such as bioleaching, which utilizes microorganisms to extract metals with less energy and fewer chemicals. This not only offers efficiency but also reduces reliance on direct mining altogether.
"With this project, we will be able to add new metals to our production portfolio using circular economy principles, contributing to the green transition and greater environmental sustainability," stated Joaquín Gotor, CLC's Director of Innovation and Environment. By adopting these principles, CLC hopes to minimize the negative impacts associated with cobalt extraction, transforming waste materials from old mining operations back to valuable resources.
The RAWMINA project, which began its work back in 2021, is entering its final phases with 19 partner organizations from ten countries. CLC is testing new extraction techniques for not just cobalt, but also tungsten, gold, and silver from mine waste. These materials are becoming increasingly important as Europe strives for energy independence from external sources such as China.
Another significant point of exploration within the project is the holistic approach toward reducing Europe's reliance on foreign critical raw materials. The ability to produce CRM from local mine waste could alleviate potential shortages and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Today, the focus is beginning to pivot toward Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. While these newer batteries may hold slightly less energy, they excel in longevity, safety, and align more closely with ethical sourcing principles.
The interplay between solar panels and energy storage solutions often entails two methods: DC coupling and AC coupling. DC coupling involves the direct transfer of the electricity generated by the solar panels to the batteries, creating highly efficient setups. On the other hand, AC coupling is more suitable for existing solar installations, as it allows integration with pre-built systems.
