Suspicious Fire Engulfs Nunawading Shopping Complex

Arson suspected as residents evacuated from nearby buildings during massive blaze.

A suspicious fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Forty Winks store on Whitehorse Road, Nunawading, leading to the evacuation of dozens of nearby residents. The fire, labeled as suspected arson by authorities, has drawn attention from emergency services across Melbourne.

Fire crews responded to numerous 000 calls reporting the fire at around 2:20 AM. Upon arrival, they found the two-storey structure engulfed in flames and emitting large clouds of smoke. The blaze was significant enough to quickly spread to adjoining businesses, prompting emergency services to escalate their response.

Victoria Police confirmed they evacuated approximately 25 to 30 residents from nearby homes out of caution, as thick smoke began to envelop the area. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, with paramedics present at the scene on standby, though no medical treatment was required.

According to the Victoria Police, "The exact circumstances surrounding the fire are yet to be determined but at this stage it is being treated as suspicious." This suspicion casts doubt on the cause of the fire, raising concerns over possible malicious intent.

More than 95 firefighters and 26 fire trucks were deployed to tackle the flames, with aerial units also involved as crews battled the fierce blaze for several hours. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jamie Hansen commented on the situation, highlighting the dangers present due to the materials involved. He stated, "Paints and solvents cause significant concern to firefighters," alluding to the paint store next to the affected area and the risks it poses under high heat.

The fire crews demonstrated remarkable resilience and teamwork, managing to save the nearby bicycle store from being consumed by flames. Yet, the threat remained for several hours as firefighters continued their efforts to bring the fire under control.

Community alerts were issued for the surrounding neighborhoods, advising residents to close their windows and doors to prevent smoke from entering their homes. Authorities warned residents of the potential air quality issues due to the large volumes of smoke drifting southwest from the fire site. Affecting roadways, Whitehorse Road remains blocked off as investigations and cleanup efforts continue.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or possesses dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward with any information they have. They can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 to assist with the investigation.

While the exact cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed, the swift response from local firefighting teams and police has undoubtedly mitigated what might have been even greater damage and risk to the community. Local residents, still shaken by the early morning chaos, await news from authorities with bated breath as the investigation progresses.

This incident serves as yet another reminder of the ever-present threats faced by communities and the brave actions of first responders who tirelessly work to protect lives and property. With vigilance and cooperation, it’s hoped the origins of this disturbing blaze will soon be uncovered.
