Suspect Arrested For Attempted Murder Of Wife On Oahu Hike

A Maui man is accused of attacking his wife during a hike, leaving her in critical condition and raising concerns about domestic violence.

In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old man from Maui, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his wife during a hike at Pali Lookout, Oahu. This morning, authorities reported that the woman was severely injured, with multiple head and facial injuries, and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) stated that the couple went for a hike at around 10:30 a.m. on March 24, 2025, when the incident occurred. Witnesses allege that Konig attempted to push his wife off the trail and subsequently struck her in the head with a rock. In a further disturbing twist, sources revealed that Konig allegedly withdrew two syringes and tried to poke her with them after she refused to take a picture with him.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported the 36-year-old victim to a local hospital, where she is being treated for serious injuries. As the investigation unfolded, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announced that the Nu’uanu Pali State Wayside park would be closed indefinitely due to police activity.

Following a frantic day of searching, law enforcement officials were able to locate and arrest Konig near Pali Highway around 6:45 p.m. after a brief chase. His charges at this time are pending. HPD had earlier released details of Konig’s appearance, describing him as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He was wearing a light gray shirt, blue shorts, and carrying a black bag at the time of the incident.

Konig, who works as an anesthesiologist at several medical facilities in Maui, has been placed on suspension by Maui Health pending an investigation into the allegations against him. A spokesperson stated, “Maui Health is committed to patient safety and upholding the highest standards of care. We have been made aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD,” emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

As the story develops, the community is left grappling with the implications of such violent behavior, particularly in a serene setting like Pali Lookout. A daily destination for hikers and tourists alike, the area has experienced an unsettling disruption to its usual tranquility due to this incident.

Anyone with information regarding the incident or Konig’s whereabouts prior to his arrest is encouraged to contact the Honolulu Police Department or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300.

This incident raises essential questions about domestic violence and safety, reminding the public of the hidden dangers that can arise even in peaceful environments. Authorities are likely to further investigate the motives behind Konig’s alarming actions and whether there were underlying issues that contributed to this tragic assault.

In the aftermath of this event, the Honolulu Police Department continues to urge caution. They advise avoiding the area surrounding Nu’uanu Pali State Wayside until further notice and to report any suspicious activity immediately to law enforcement.

This distressing case serves as a reminder that action is required when witnessing or experiencing domestic violence in one's community. Support systems exist, and help is available for those in need of assistance.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the well-being of the victim and the broader implications of domestic violence locally and nationally.
