Surprising Snowstorm Blankets Tenerife's Mount Teide

Tenerife faces travel warnings as roads close amid unexpected holiday rainfall and snowfall.

Tenerife, the popular Spanish island known for its sunny beaches, faced surprising holiday weather this year with significant snowfall on its highest peak, Mount Teide. Over the past few days, heavy precipitation from over 2000 meters elevated temperatures fell as snow, transforming the region's scenic landscapes just before Christmas. Cameras from the Izaña Observatory captured images of the snow-covered terrain, drawing local residents to the mountains for snowy views.

The regional government has issued warnings for residents and tourists alike to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to the Teide National Park, which is currently affected by icy conditions. Several roads leading to the iconic volcano have been closed due to snow and ice, forcing roadworkers to work diligently over the weekend to clear paths. “Our priority is everyone’s safety,” Blanca Pérez, from the local administration, advised, underlining the importance of heeding government recommendations during these hazardous conditions.

Weather warnings were first issued on Saturday as forecasts predicted severe rain on the Canary Islands, particularly affecting Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The authorities cautioned all travelers on Tenerife to steer clear of mountainous areas until the weather improves. Reports indicate temperatures reaching as low as -1.5 degrees Celsius, creating conditions nearly alien to the typically warm island.

This unexpected winter weather is welcomed by some locals. Many are joyous about the snow, comparing it to the rare atmospheric phenomenon where Tenerife’s snowy peaks can bring joy similar to discovering gold. “It’s fantastic. It’s like gold falling from the sky,” one resident told reporters. The snow is seen as beneficial for the ecosystem, animals, and even for addressing seasonal droughts.

On the other hand, tourists who planned trips to the island's natural wonders are facing disappointments. Reports emerged of visitors needing to rethink holiday plans due to the adverse weather conditions. Television meteorologist Leon Lee stated, “If you had planned a trip, you need to reconsider, but it’s not like the world is ending.” Despite the difficulties, he noted the snowfall might make for stunning views once conditions stabilize.

Interestingly, this snowfall marks one of only several instances within several years when Tenerife has experienced snow accumulation on Teide, especially giving fond memories of the last significant snow event. The previous winter season was one for the books not for snow, but rather for its record warmth being the hottest year since 1961.

The situation took many by surprise, as snow isn’t entirely out of the question at higher elevations on the island, but drastic weather fluctuations remain rare occurrences. The local government encourages people to stay informed through official channels, ensuring people's safety remains at the forefront as they navigate this unforeseen winter wonder.

While Tenerife is well known for its beaches and pleasant weather year-round, this year’s snowy backdrop unexpectedly aligns with the holiday spirit. The beautiful yet treacherous conditions serve as both warning and wonder for those on the island as they enjoy this rare snowy Christmas with caution.
