Health officials are sounding alarms as recent reports indicate a rise in dengue cases alongside new suspected cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) across South Asia. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Bangladesh recorded 61 dengue patients admitted to hospitals within the last 24 hours, highlighting the continued struggle against this mosquito-borne illness.
"During the period, 10 dengue patients were hospitalised in Barishal division, 13 in Chattogram, 10 each from Dhaka North and South, alongside other regions like Rajshahi and Khulna," the DGHS stated, pointing out the rise of total infections to 418 this year alone. There have also been three reported deaths associated with dengue this year, which, though lower than last year's total of 575 deaths from over 101,000 cases, is still worrying for health authorities.
Meanwhile, health concerns extend to India, where two suspected HMPV cases were detected among young patients aged 7 and 13 years. Shashikant Shambharkar, Deputy Director of Health, confirmed their condition and mentioned, "The reports of both these patients have come back positive... Both these patients have been treated and discharged." Their cases are being examined at AIIMS Nagpur.
India's health surveillance efforts have already identified three total cases of HMPV, which were noted as part of routine monitoring of respiratory illnesses. Reports indicate two cases identified last week were from Bengaluru, Karnataka, and another from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda addressed the public's concerns about HMPV, stating, "There is no cause for alarm. HMPV is not new; it was first identified back in 2001." Nadda emphasized the point, noting the virus spreads through the air and can affect people of all ages, particularly more during the winter and early spring months. He reassured the public, stating, "Health systems and surveillance networks are vigilant and ready to respond to any health challenges. We are closely monitoring the situation."
Nadda also highlighted the World Health Organization's involvement, indicating they will be sharing reports shortly on respiratory virus trends. "The WHO has taken cognisance of the situation and will share its report with us shortly," he stated, assuring there is no unsettling spike in respiratory pathogens at this time.
While authorities remain vigilant about dengue, especially with the return of such higher case numbers, this concurrent emergence of HMPV adds to the health challenges confronted by the regions. The monitoring efforts will continue, with significant emphasis on ensuring public awareness and precautionary measures to limit the spread of both diseases.
Public health experts remind communities of the importance of vigilance as warmer months approach, as both dengue and HMPV pose substantial health risks. With reports from health services active both nationally and regionally, maintaining awareness about symptoms and preventive practices remains pivotal as officials navigate these increasing case loads.
