Surfer Makai McNamara Rescued After Wipeout At Pipeline

Family and community rally around renowned surfer as he recovers from serious injury sustained during dramatic incident at iconic surf break.

Makai McNamara, a well-known big-wave surfer and member of one of Hawaii's most prominent surf families, was involved in a life-threatening incident at Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore earlier this week. On Sunday morning, following what was described as a dramatic wipeout, McNamara was pulled from the ocean unresponsive, prompting immediate rescue efforts by lifeguards and nearby surfers.

The incident occurred around 9 AM, during huge surf conditions estimated at 8-10 feet. According to reports, the 29-year-old surfer fell awkwardly during his ride, which resulted in him being knocked unconscious. Eli Olson, McNamara's close friend and fellow pro-surfer, was among the first to reach him, stating, "He was underwater for close to two minutes before I got to him... I wanted to keep his head above water so he didn't take more water in." Lifeguards and surfers worked together under perilous conditions to bring him ashore.

Once on the beach, lifeguards from the North Shore Lifeguard Association sprang to action, performing CPR and using automated external defibrillators (AEDs). After several attempts, McNamara regained consciousness, much to the relief and gratitude of those present. Landon McNamara, his younger brother and recent winner of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, expressed his overwhelming feelings on social media. "They brought him back to life on the beach. There was life back in his eyes. He spoke words. The feelings were overwhelming," Landon wrote.

Makai was quickly transported to Queen's Medical Center, where he is currently recovering. His father, Liam McNamara—a celebrated surfer himself and director of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational—shared updates about his son's condition. On Instagram, he noted, "It’s been 24 hours since the incident, and he’s on his road to recovery. He’s getting very good care at Queen’s Hospital. He feels your energy, he feels your love... Over the next two days, Makai will be kept asleep to optimize his healing process.”

This harrowing episode took place amid what has been described as a challenging winter season for surfing at the Pipeline. The past two years have seen numerous serious injuries among surfers, with many noted for their dangerous wipeouts, including prominent names like Joao Chianca, Billy Kemper, and Koa Rothman. Makai’s incident adds to the somber narrative intertwining before the surfing community and highlights the extreme risks associated with big-wave surfing.

The rescue has sparked calls for the surfing community to rally around its members. Landon stated, "Right now we all need to send all of our healing energy and prayers his way. I know he’d probably roust me for making this post ‘cause he’s the real deal, haha, but I truly believe the collective positive energy and prayers make a difference.” The weight of the experience was evident, as Landon and the local surfing community have come together to offer support and encouragement to Makai.

During this trying time, other surfers and fans have expressed their sentiments and prayers via social media. Videos of the rescue have circulated widely, capturing the dramatic efforts made by lifeguards and bystanders to save Makai. Many have commended the bravery and skill of those who assisted him, acknowledging how swiftly they acted during such tense moments.

Makai's family continues to appeal for positive thoughts and prayers as he navigates this recovery. Liam reiterated the importance of mental strength for Makai's healing process. "Makai is strong, and he’s going to get through this,” he said firmly. Facing the uncertainty of his son’s injury, he communicated to the public how grateful he is for the support they received. “Thank you very much for all the messages of support. We love and appreciate you.”

The incident at Pipeline serves not only as a reminder of the risks associated with high-level surfing but also of the community’s deep bond and commitment to supporting one another. Surfers regularly risk their lives at famous breaks like Pipeline, where sudden and unexpected wipeouts can have dire consequences. The overwhelming response from the surfing community during this crisis highlights the strength of their friendship and solidarity.

While the exact nature of Makai's injuries is still under wraps, the collective hope of the surfing world continues to focus on his swift recovery. Fans and fellow surfers are dedicated to continuing their prayers and well-wishes, underscoring the enduring connection between athletes and their communities. Looking back at the past few years at Pipeline, it's clear the stakes are high, but so is the spirit of camaraderie and support shared among those who live for the waves.

At this time, the family is awaiting more updates on Makai's condition and are hopeful for his continued healing. Given the dangers and unpredictability of big-wave surfing, they're appreciative of every moment they get to spend together, reinforcing the value of life and health above all else.
