The 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela is set to take place from February 7 to 23, 2025, at Surajkund, Faridabad, Haryana, and promises to be one of the largest events of its kind, attracting artisans and visitors from around the globe.
This vibrant crafts fair, famous for celebrating India's immense handicraft traditions, will draw participants from 42 countries, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence present within their crafts. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Central Tourism and Culture Minister, will inaugurate the event on February 7 at 10 AM.
According to Kala Ramachandran, the Secretary of the Arts and Culture Department, "This fair will showcase our cultural traditions to the world." The mela is expected to host around 648 artisans who will present over 1,000 stalls, offering handmade products ranging from textiles and pottery to jewelry and woodwork, effectively reflecting the rich diversity of Indian art.
This year’s Mela focuses on preserving ancient crafts, introducing the Special Heritage Craft Area where visitors can observe demonstrations of traditional techniques and participate in workshops. This initiative aims to keep fading crafts alive for future generations.
Every evening, the Main Chaupal will feature performances by folk artists, including traditional dance and musical showcases like Bhangra and Odissi, creating an immersive cultural experience. Visitors will also be entertained by puppet shows, storytelling sessions, and interactive folk performances throughout the day.
Food enthusiasts will find delight at the multi-cuisine food court, serving local dishes from various states, such as Punjab’s Amritsari Kulcha and Rajasthani Dal Baati Churma, among others. International vendors will offer global cuisine, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The event will also integrate convenience for attendees, as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has partnered with the mela organizers. Visitors can purchase tickets online through the DMRC app, at select Metro stations, and at the venue itself. Additional ticket booths will be provided to facilitate easy access to the fair.
With shuttle services connected to nearby metro stations and dedicated parking facilities for those driving, organizers encourage everyone to use public transportation to mitigate traffic concerns, especially during peak visiting hours on weekends.
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela not only acts as a marketplace, but also as a celebratory event of culture, craftsmanship, food, and entertainment, making it an unmissable experience for anyone interested in the richness of India’s artistic traditions. "Food lovers are encouraged to try regional specialties from every participating region," mentioned The Economic Times.
