The 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela has officially kicked off today, February 7, 2025, and will continue until February 23. This year’s Mela, inaugurated by Central Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat along with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, has positioned itself as one of the largest celebrations of crafts and cultures globally.
Set against the backdrop of Faridabad, Haryana, the fair is expected to feature creativity and artistry from 648 participants representing 42 countries, including nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan. These participants will showcase their unique handlooms and traditional crafts, effectively turning Surajkund's vibrant grounds back to life.
This year, the theme states are Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, which will highlight the rich cultural heritage and traditional crafts of these regions. With over 1,000 stalls set up at the venue, visitors will have the opportunity to explore and appreciate various art forms and culinary delights, all under one roof.
Tickets for the Mela are priced at Rs 120 on weekdays and Rs 180 on weekends. These can be purchased via the Delhi Metro Momentum 2.0 app, at metro stations, and onsite at designated ticket booths located throughout the fairgrounds. For the first time, online stall bookings have been made available, ensuring a smoother process for both artisans and guests.
Security remains a top priority, with 600 CCTV cameras installed to monitor activities within the Mela, emphasizing the organizers’ commitment to providing a safe experience for all attendees. Tourists can savor delicious cuisines from various Indian states, enriched by local delicacies from the two theme states.
Visitors will also be entertained by numerous cultural performances as renowned artists and musicians grace the stages, offering everything from traditional dance to modern music. These performances aim to enrich the experience, fostering cultural exchange and collaboration.
According to Haryana's Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma, "We are expecting more tourists this year compared to the previous one," forecasting heightened interest and attendance, thanks to the effective promotional channels and the allure of the rich cultural displays.
The Surajkund Mela, which reflects the ethos of Indian traditions, serves as not only a market for artists but also provides them with the platform they need to showcase their craftsmanship directly to the public. It champions local artisans and emphasizes the importance of ‘vocal for local’ initiatives as part of the Indian government’s broader vision for cultural empowerment.
On this occasion, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat remarked, "This fair is not just an exhibition; it is a celebration of craftsmanship, heritage, and global unity." His sentiment encapsulates the essence of the event, bringing together diverse cultures and promoting the craftsmanship intrinsic to their identities.
All attendees are encouraged to visit the colorful stalls, engage with talented artisans, and indulge in culinary experiences spanning multiple regions of India. With its rich history dating back to 1987, the Surajkund International Crafts Mela has solidified its place as one of India’s most cherished cultural events.
Overall, the festive atmosphere, cultural richness, and artisan displays create an experience not to be missed, promising not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire everyone who attends.
