Supermarkets Prepare For Busy Easter And Anzac Day Weekend

Shoppers are advised to check store hours for Easter and Anzac Day closures across Australia.

As Australians prepare for a long weekend filled with hot cross buns and Easter eggs, many are left wondering about the availability of their favorite supermarkets during this busy holiday period. With the Easter long weekend approaching from Good Friday on April 18 to Easter Monday on April 21, 2025, followed closely by Anzac Day on April 25, it’s crucial to be aware of which stores will be open and when.

Starting with Good Friday, the majority of Woolworths supermarkets across Australia will be closed on April 18, 2025. This includes all stores in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, as well as in Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory. However, a few exceptions exist. In South Australia, stores in Mount Barker, Mount Barker South, Murray Bridge Marketplace, and Victor Harbor will remain open. Meanwhile, in Western Australia, select stores including Dunsborough, Perth Airport, Eaton Fair, Margaret River, Busselton, and Dalyellup will also be operational.

For those looking to shop on Easter Saturday, April 19, 2025, Woolworths will reopen all its supermarkets across the country, although some Metro stores may still be closed. Customers in New South Wales and the ACT can expect all stores to be open, while the same applies to Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, the situation varies significantly by state. In New South Wales and the ACT, most Woolworths stores will be closed, while all stores in Victoria will be open, except for Moama. Queensland will see all Woolworths stores open, with the exception of Hervey Bay Pialba, and some Metro stores may also be closed. South Australia will witness most stores closed, while Tasmania and Western Australia will have all stores open. The Northern Territory will again see most Woolworths stores closed.

As for Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, Woolworths will resume normal operations nationwide, except for South Australia and the Northern Territory, where only a handful of stores will be open.

Coles supermarkets will follow a similar pattern. On Good Friday, April 18, 2025, Coles stores will also be closed across the country, with the exception of the Victor Harbor, Murray Bridge Green, and Mount Barker stores in South Australia. Easter Saturday will see all Coles stores reopen, although some may remain closed in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and the Northern Territory.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, most Coles stores in New South Wales and South Australia will be closed, with exceptions for specific locations such as Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla, Murray Bridge Green, Mount Gambier, Victor Harbor, and Mount Barker. Coles supermarkets in Tasmania and the ACT will be open, along with select stores in Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. On Easter Monday, April 21, all Coles stores, except for some in South Australia, will operate with reduced hours.

ALDI will be closed on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, but will reopen on April 19 in Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Some ALDI stores in those states will also close on Easter Sunday, with the majority of stores in Western Australia and Victoria remaining open. On Easter Monday, some South Australian ALDI stores will also close.

Dan Murphy's stores will be closed on Good Friday, but reopen with reduced hours on Easter Saturday. On Easter Sunday, 52 stores in New South Wales will be closed, while all other states and territories will have Dan Murphy's stores open. Reduced hours may apply on Easter Monday.

BWS bottleshops will also be closed on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, but will resume regular trading hours on Easter Saturday. Most BWS stores in New South Wales, Northern Territory, and South Australia will be closed on Easter Sunday, while other states will operate normally. All BWS stores will return to normal trading hours on Easter Monday, with exceptions in South Australia.

Vintage Cellars will have most stores open on Easter Sunday, with the notable exception of New South Wales and Northern Territory, although the Terrigal Vintage Cellars in New South Wales will be open. All Vintage Cellar stores will operate on Easter Monday.

Big W stores will be closed on Good Friday but will reopen on Easter Saturday. A selection of Big W stores will be open on Easter Sunday and Monday, but customers are advised to check their site for specific store details.

As Anzac Day approaches on Friday, April 25, 2025, it’s important to note that all retail stores in New South Wales are required to remain closed, with exceptions for small fruit and vegetable shops, chemists, cafes, and takeaway food shops. In the ACT and Victoria, Woolworths stores will open at 1 p.m. on Anzac Day, while Queensland stores will be closed except for the Brisbane Airport location. Most Woolworths stores in South Australia will remain closed, while Tasmania will see stores open at 12:30 p.m. In Western Australia, all Perth Metro stores will be closed, but regional Woolworths stores will open at either 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. The Northern Territory will see all Woolworths stores open at 1 p.m.
