Supermarket Loyalty Cards Produce Real Savings

CMA report confirms loyalty pricing offers genuine savings but shoppers should compare prices

Shoppers have recently received some good news about their beloved supermarket loyalty cards. A deep-dive report by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has confirmed what many have suspected: these cards can actually yield significant savings. The watchdog analyzed over 50,000 products and found out of all the loyalty price options, 92% marked genuine discounts compared to the typical prices at major UK supermarkets.

How much are we talking about? Well, the CMA estimates shoppers could save between 17% to 25% on products labeled with loyalty prices across leading retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, the Co-op, and Morrisons. This confirmation might put to rest some of the skepticism surrounding loyalty card prices, but there's still more to the story.

George Lusty, interim executive director of consumer protection at the CMA, weighed in on the findings. "We know many people don’t trust loyalty card prices, which is why we did a deep-dive to get to the bottom of whether supermarkets were treating shoppers fairly," he explained. Lusty expressed hope the findings would restore confidence among shoppers, stating, "After analyzing tens of thousands of products, we found almost all the loyalty prices reviewed offered genuine savings against the usual price."

Despite these positive findings, it’s important to take note of Lusty’s caution—loyalty prices aren’t always the best deals out there. He strongly encourages shoppers to keep their shopping habits fluid, advising them to explore multiple stores: "While these discounts are legitimate, our review has shown loyalty prices aren’t always the cheapest option, so shopping around is still key. By checking a few shops, you can continue to stretch your hard-earned cash.”

The CMA's investigation follows mounting consumer concerns about loyalty pricing practices. Last year, many worried these strategies might lead to price manipulation, potentially disadvantaging customers who opt not to participate. This concern became even more relevant as retailers have increasingly adapted their discount strategies to attract loyalty card holders. But does this signaling mean the end of fair pricing for all customers? Lusty believes transparency is key, nudging supermarkets to include everyone, particularly groups traditionally excluded, such as those under 18 and those without smartphones.

Industry expert Sue Davies from the consumer group Which? is calling for continued scrutiny on loyalty pricing by the CMA to guarantee adherence to established laws. These regulations stipulate the “usual” price should have been recently enforced before the discounts kick in. She remarked, “Two-tier loyalty pricing has become common practice across retailers. It’s reassuring the CMA has found most of the prices offered genuine savings.”

Yet, it’s hard to ignore the underlying truth: even when discounts appear attractive, they can occasionally mask poorer deals. Which? has flagged alarming cases where loyalty price offers sounded more appealing than they really were. This underlines the necessity of remaining vigilant and dissecting each offer effectively.

The loyalty card culture continues to evolve at organizations like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and the Co-op. For their part, these supermarkets are increasingly incentivizing loyalty programs to drive sales, with many cards recently introducing or improving discounts. For example, Tesco's Clubcard is facing heightened emphasis on discounts for members, and Sainsbury's has also started offering special deals exclusively to Nectar card holders.

The CMA’s report serves as a reminder for consumers to remain mindful and strategic when they hit grocery aisles. It's wonderful to enjoy the perks of loyalty cards, but consumers are urged to do the math before committing to one.

So, if you're out there using your supermarket loyalty cards, take this news as both encouragement and caution. Keep those eyes wide open when evaluating promotions and continue to compare prices across different stores—and don't forget to enjoy the savings!
