Sunshine And Surfing Amid Flooding In Itanhaém

Recent rains caused flooding, prompting residents to surf the streets, as the traditional Reisado takes place.

Itanhaém is set to enjoy sunny weather on December 30, with temperatures ranging from 19°C to 27°C throughout the day. According to data from Tempo Agora, the morning started at 21°C and peaked at 27°C during the afternoon. By the end of the day, temperatures are expected to drop to 26°C. Despite the pleasant conditions, there's still an 86% chance of rain, making the humidity levels hover between 70% and 100%. Winds are expected to average 14 km/h before reaching peaks of 19 km/h.

This weather report arrives amid the backdrop of recent heavy rainfall, which turned some streets of Itanhaém absolutely unrecognizable. Following intense downpours between the evening of December 26 and the early hours of December 27, residents found themselves surfing on flooded roads, turning what could have been distressing conditions for many, momentarily, confined to fun for some residents of the Anchieta neighborhood. A video circulated on social media capturing two locals riding surfboards down the flooded streets, undoubtedly raising eyebrows about safety and sanitation as floodwaters can carry harmful bacteria and viruses.

"Sobre os alagamentos, a cidade apresentou alguns pontos no último final de semana. Tanto o índice pluviométrico e quanto a maré apresentaram significativa diminuição poucas horas depois," stated the Itanhaém City Administration through Santa Portal. They noted awareness of the flooded streets and had already dispatched teams to address the issues. Specific problems reported included impassable roads due to large holes, particularly on São Bernardo Street, as well as sewage conditions on Avenida Julinha, which exacerbated flooding with various depressions on the roads noted across several neighborhoods.

While issues related to flooding remain apparent, municipal authorities are working diligently to rectify these situations. They indicated plans to maintain the affected areas, assuring residents of their commitment to restoring normalcy.

On another note, it is the season for the traditional Reisado of Itanhaém, which started on December 26 and runs until January 5. This customary celebration pays homage to the visit of the Three Wise Men to the newborn Jesus and reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. The event features nightly processions beginning around 10:30 PM until the early hours, visiting approximately 120 households throughout the celebration.

The procession is led by musicians and singers, starting with silent announcements at homes before having the traditional songs sung. The group collects donations for local festivities, creating bonds within the community.

Historically, the Reisado of Itanhaém traces its roots back to Portuguese traditions. It has evolved from small male-only groups concentrating on instrumental music to inclusive celebrations featuring women and children, showcasing the vibrant culture of Itanhaém.

With historical significance and the echoes of past traditions, the Reisado not only marks the Epiphany but also revitalizes community spirit and local customs. It is clear the city is rich with traditions, creating fascinating ties between its heritage and the present-day festivities.
