Subaru has officially launched its highly anticipated new WRX Wagon, showcasing the model's top-spec 'tS' grade during its presentation by Subaru New Zealand on December 18, 2024. The new WRX Wagon is set to captivate automotive enthusiasts with its impressive specifications, including the powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and the innovative Subaru Performance Transmission.
Originally debuting as a performance sedan distinct from the Impreza lineup, the WRX has been making waves since its transition from the third-generation Impreza WRX back in 2014. Over the years, it has evolved as both the sporty WRX STI and the more everyday-friendly WRX S4. The recent years, particularly the end of 2019, saw the discontinuation of the WRX STI, leaving the WRX S4 as the focal point of Subaru's performance offerings.
The release of the new WRX Wagon highlights Subaru's extended reach beyond its traditional markets, particularly as it becomes available alongside the Levorg, known as the WRX Wagon outside Japan. While the Levorg was initially crafted for Japanese consumers, its broad acceptance has led to its introduction to right-hand-drive markets like Australia and New Zealand.
With dimensions measuring 4,755 mm long, 1,795 mm wide, and 1,500 mm high, the WRX Wagon is impressive not only for its sporty performance but also for its practicality. Its dynamic front design and smooth body lines echo the vehicle's sporty nature, promising both style and functionality. Both WRX models—sedan and wagon—come equipped with either the 1.8-liter turbo or the 2.4-liter turbo engine. Both variants include Subaru's advanced Continuous Variable Transmission but the 2.4-liter model elevates the driving experience with its simulated eight-speed sports transmission, ensuring swift gear transitions and responsive performance.
The new 'tS' specification, equivalent to the STI Sport available on the Japanese market, guarantees exhilarating performance, delivering 275 PS and 350 Nm of torque, with the Japanese version boosting torque to 375 Nm. The WRX Wagon and WRX sedan models enable full-time all-wheel drive, ensuring stability and control on the road.
On the technological front, the new WRX Wagon is packed with enhanced features, elevatng passenger entertainment with Harman Kardon’s 10-speaker audio system, alongside support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also accommodates modern connectivity needs with the addition of new USB Type-C ports, catering to the tech-savvy consumer.
Along with the debut of the 'tS' grade, Subaru has introduced the WRX Wagon's new color, 'Asteroid Gray Pearl,' replacing the previously available 'Crystal White Pearl' with 'Ceramic White.'
The price for both the WRX and WRX Wagon has been set at NZD 67,990, which equates to approximately 605,000 yen, making this launch not just about performance but also about competitive pricing within the market.
The introduction of the WRX Wagon marks another significant chapter for Subaru, appealing to both loyal fans and new customers. With its thrilling performance capabilities, sophisticated features, and practical design, it is well-poised to take on the challenges of today's diversified automotive market.
